Highlights
  • Black River Gorges National Park - The Black River Gorges National Park, 67.54 km² of pure, wild, nature. The heart of Mauritius island, home of many endemic species, both animal and floral.

It offers a great discovery of the nature of the island.

During this hike we will discover different viewpoints from which we can contemplate different parts of the park and its surroundings.

Half-way up our climb, we discover the “Mare aux Joncs Gorge” that we like to call the “Bats Valley” because of the thousands of Mauritan Fruit-Bats we can observe there.

On top of our ascension, at 400m above sea level we get an amazing sight on the West-Coast, its lagoons and beautiful villages amountains. From there, we start our back back down until the black-river where we can stop to enjoy a nice swim before continuing and reach back our starting point, where we’ve met a few hours earlier.

Additional Information

The Black River Gorges National Park, a pristine 67.54 km² wilderness, is nestled in the core of the island of Mauritius. It is a sanctuary for a myriad of indigenous animal and plant species.

The park provides a splendid exploration of the island’s natural environment.

On this hiking journey, we will uncover varied vantage points presenting diverse views of the park and the areas around it.

Midway through our ascent, we stumble upon the “Mare aux Joncs Gorge”, fondly referred to as the “Bats Valley”, attributable to the innumerable Mauritian Fruit-Bats spotted there.

Upon reaching the zenith of our climb, at an altitude of 400m, we are rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of the West-Coast, its blue lagoons and picturesque villages nestled amongst the mountains. From this point, we begin our descent towards the black river, a perfect spot to unwind with a refreshing swim before moving on and returning to our initial meeting point, where we had gathered a few hours earlier.

Walk/Hike in Gorges National Park - Awesome walk/hike in Gorges national park with Judish and Rowin, and a lovely other couple who joined as well. The early start was a good idea, nice views, interesting talks. The level of hike was moderate - easy, around 2 hours. The walk is mostly in the shadow and ends - if preferred - with a refreshing bath in the river. Must do! Thank you Judish & Rowin for this nice start into the day !

Great walk in beautiful surroundings. - Very enjoyable and interesting hike with Yudish and Rowin. The guides gave us lots of interesting information and were extremely friendly and helpful. They went at a suitable pace for the group. Some of the walk was quite steep but there were plenty of stops to admire the views and a welcome swim at the end. A very good experience. We would definitely use Yanature again.

Challenging but very beautiful and rewarding 3-hour hike with a very charming guide, Fabrice - The company sorting out the hike weren’t very responsive while we were trying to organise the hike through Mautourco. But the hike was wonderful and the guide, Fabrice, was delightful, pointing out the local wildlife and geography.

An amazing way to really get to know Mauritus geology and ecology - There are several trails available and we went on the Pilgrimage trail with our lovely local guide from Yanature, Yudesh, who was knowledgeable, professional and fun. The trails are clearly marked, so in reality you don't need a guide to explore, but we are so glad we chose a tour. We learnt about the history of the island from its geology, ecology and social history, and without a guide wouldn't have been possible. It makes you appreciate and understand the island even more. Our loop trail took about 3 hours. First half is a climb up and comes down to the river which you can dip in and cool off. The reserve is really big and this trail which is easy to medium only covers a small portion of the whole forest. It's something that's really worth doing to truly get close to Mauritus' wilderness considering only a very small percentage of the original forest cover is now in tact. Thanks so much to Yudesh and Yanature for giving us a peek to this gorgeous gem in your island.

Great jungle and waterfall experience. - Very nice hike with small group through jungle and along 5 waterfalls. Stunning views, true jungle experience. Great guide (Yudish) who took good care of us and gave good tips and explanations on the way. Only thing was it was quite busy due to Christmas season and they could maybe have spaced the groups a bit better. Amazing swim under last waterfall
