- Municipality of Rocchetta al Volturno - In secluded and often overlooked spots, nestled within caverns or beside boulders, silent shelters were erected, guided by the whispers of the wind. These were sanctuaries for wanderers seeking authentic affection, watchtowers perched over the insurmountable chasm of external strife, and havens for those displaced during World War II who could scarcely breathe without fear. In the Alto Volturno region, the stone has been a gentle refuge and a vital bulwark during times of sheer terror and disenchantment, weariness, and eventual salvation. It has been a beacon of hope, a source of comfort, and has cast a renewed illumination on the journey ahead.
On this tour, we will explore how the stone has historically provided protection and hospitality to the fauna, flora, and humans inhabiting and continuing to inhabit the upper Volturno valley.
