Drive to Kilimanjaro National Park Marangu Gate, Hike to Mandara Hut
Mount Kilimanjaro - The Marangu route, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola” route, is a traditional trek on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the oldest and most established path. Many prefer the Marangu route as it is considered the easiest due to its gradual incline. It is also the only route that provides dormitory-style sleeping huts. Mandara and Kibo Huts each have 60 bunk beds, while Horombo Hut has 120. Guests are provided with mattresses and pillows, but sleeping bags are still necessary. The huts feature communal dining areas and basic washrooms, with flushing toilets and running water at the lower huts, and long drop toilets and buckets of water at Kibo Hut. After breakfast and a briefing, drive to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate to register and start the trek. Walk through the rainforest to reach the Mandara Huts. A side trip to Maundi Crater offers a great view of the surroundings, including Northern Tanzania.
Hike from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Kilimanjaro National Park - Depart the rainforest glades and follow an ascending trail through the open moorlands to the Horombo Huts. The views of Mawenzi and the Kibo summit are spectacular. Look out for giant lobelias and groundsels. You may start to feel the effects of the altitude. • Elevation: 2700m/8875ft to 3700m/12,200ft • Distance: 12km/7.5mi • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours • Habitat: Heathland
Rest Day at Horombo Hut
Kilimanjaro National Park - Spend a rest day at Horombo Hut with an optional hike near Mawenzi Peak.
Hike from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Kilimanjaro National Park - Continue ascending past the last water point, crossing the saddle of Kilimanjaro between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The vegetation starts with upper heathland and then transitions into a “moonscape”. Have dinner, rest, and prepare for the summit climb. • Elevation: 3700m/12,200ft to 4700m/15,500ft • Distance: 9km/5.5mi • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours • Habitat: Alpine Desert
Hike Kibo Hut to Summit, and down to Horombo Hut
Kilimanjaro National Park - Start the climb to the summit very early in the morning (midnight to 2am) on steep and heavy scree or snow up to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. Continue ascending to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. The views are breathtaking. Take a photo at the summit to share with friends and family. Descend, stopping for lunch and rest at Kibo before continuing to the Horombo Huts. The initial climb is done in the dark and requires headlamps or flashlights. It will be very cold until you start descending, so wear all your warm layers. This is the most challenging part of the trek with many switchbacks. Going slowly “pole pole” and maintaining a positive attitude will help you reach the summit! • Elevation: 4700m/15,500ft to 5895m/19,340ft • Down to 3700m/12,200ft • Distance: 6km/4mi up / 15km/9mi down • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours up / 15km/9mi down • Habitat: Alpine Desert
Hike Horombo Hut to trail head, drive to Moshi and back to Arusha
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, descend steadily through moorland to Mandara Hut. Continue descending through a lush forest path to the National Park gate at Marangu. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles are useful. Shorts and t-shirts are usually sufficient (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). A vehicle will meet you at Marangu gate to drive you back to Arusha via Moshi. • Elevation: 3700m/12,200ft to 1700m/5500ft • Distance: 20km/12.5mi • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours • Habitat: Forest
