Initiating at Kilimanjaro’s northern flank, just by the Kenyan border, the Rongai route is unique as it’s the only trail approaching the mountain from this side. The Rongai path experiences minimal traffic due to its secluded position, thus offering hikers an untouched wilderness experience. Throughout the journey, trekkers might encounter large wildlife such as buffaloes, elephants, baboons, and antelopes. This moderately challenging route is a favourite among climbers during the wet periods. The journey includes passing Mawenzi, Tanzania’s second-highest peak, and affords panoramic views of the mountain’s rainforest. Despite a less varied landscape compared to the western routes, the Rongai route compensates with its route through a coniferous forest amidst true wilderness. Its gentle gradient and consistent acclimatization lead adventurers safely to Africa’s top spot – the Uhuru Peak of Kilimanjaro. However, the descent from the peak follows the Marangu route.
