Kilimanjaro is also known as a stratovolcano, a term used for a massive volcano composed of ash, lava, and rock. It consists of three cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is the mountain’s summit and the highest among the three volcanic structures. While Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, Kibo is classified as dormant and has the potential to erupt again. Scientists believe its last eruption occurred around 360,000 years ago. The highest point on Kibo’s crater rim is named Uhuru, which means “freedom” in Swahili.
