Highlights
  • Porta San Sebastiano - Impressive southern gateway to the city of Rome. Porta San Sebastiano, part of the Aurelian Walls built around 275 AD, also marks the beginning of the historic Via Appia Antica. Be enchanted by its beauty and discover the numerous medieval graffiti that testify to the flow of pilgrims over the centuries.
  • Catacombs of St. Callixtus - THIS STOP IS INCLUDED ONLY IN THE 5-HOUR TOUR.
Visit the official burial complex of the Church of Rome. The largest underground cemetery in the city with corridors stretching about 20km. The Catacombs of St. Callixtus, a sacred site dating back to the second century BC, are named after Deacon Callixtus I. Here, more than 50 martyrs, 16 popes, and half a million Christians were buried.
  • Appian Way (Via Appia Antica) - Known to the Romans as Regina Viarum (the queen of roads), it is considered the greatest civil engineering work of the ancient world. You will be fascinated by the history of the Via Appia Antica. A history that began in the 4th century BC thanks to the censor Appius Claudius, known as The Blind, who had it built to facilitate the flow of Roman troops to the south. The initial stretch from Rome to Capua was later extended to reach Brindisi, the most important port of Ancient Rome.
  • Parco Della Caffarella - The Parco della Caffarella, now an integral part of the Appia Antica Regional Park, is one of the largest green areas not only in Rome but also in Europe. It is a treasure rich in history hidden among its paths and groves where you can spot remains of ancient constructions.
  • Ninfeo di Egeria - Be captivated by the charm of this sacred place that tells the love story between the nymph Egeria and the second King of Rome, Numa Pompilius. Upon learning of her beloved’s death, Egeria wept in sorrow, creating a spring.
  • Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella and Castrum Caetani - Appia Antica Archaeological Park - This majestic mausoleum is a pagan tomb dedicated to Cecilia Metella, dating back to the 1st century BC. Incorporated into the Castrum Caetani, it remains the best-preserved mausoleum on the Via Appia Antica. Here you can also appreciate the remains of the medieval house of the wealthy Caetani family and the church of San Nicola, of which only the perimeter walls remain.
  • Parco degli Acquedotti - Appia Antica Archaeological Park - THIS STOP IS INCLUDED ONLY IN THE 5-HOUR TOUR.
Lunch break is planned in the shade of the Claudian aqueduct. You can enjoy Italian specialties in the splendid setting of the park. In the afternoon, there will be a tasty aperitif instead of a lunch box.
  • Parco degli Acquedotti - Appia Antica Archaeological Park - We resume the tour on e-bike through this immense green area, crossed in ancient times and still visible today by the Via Latina, the oldest road in Rome. A crossroads of the ancient Roman water network, here you can admire the grandeur of Roman engineering through the remains of some aqueducts, some of which are surprisingly still in operation.
  • Circus of Maxentius - Located on the Via Appia Antica, the Circus of Maxentius represents the best example of a Roman circus that has come down to us. Be transported to the past surrounded by the remains of ancient Rome. The still visible spine once hosted the Agonale obelisk, moved in the Renaissance to the Fountain of the Four Rivers in Piazza Navona.
  • Baths of Caracalla - Built by the emperor of the same name, the Baths of Caracalla were for about a century the largest public baths ever constructed. Today, much of their structure is still preserved. A branch of the Aqua Marcia brought water to the baths through the Antoninian aqueduct. Small remains can be seen at Porta San Sebastiano.

Great way to cap off trip to Rome - A great ride outside the crowds of the city center. Our guide Nico was knowledgeable and personable. We had been in crowds walking the city and touring sites for three days. This was a great way to capture off our trip.

Best BIKE Experience - This was probably our favorite tour in Rome. Getting to see the aqueducts up close and personal was beyond amazing. Our guide, Nico, was knowledgeable kind and watched out for us. This is an active trip requiring you to do some technical biking, so if you haven't been on a bike for years or decades, you should practice before you get here. It was a beautiful ride with nice people, and we saw many things that you would not see on any other tour.

Start a visit to Rome with this Ebike tour - The bikes were good for rental E-bikes; good brakes, helmets, smooth gear shifting, hydraulic for bumpy cobble riding. The guide was beyond fantastic: Lorenzo, young kid with lively coloquial English , big sense of humor and eager to tell a lot of history. He gave the group of 7-8 confidence to get through some tricky city intersections, told us what boost to use getting up steep hills, then took us out on a long ride along the aqueducts and back down the Appian way. It was like being on a movie set. Maybe 25 K total. Lorenzo did enough stops so no one looked wasted afterwards. He also showed tremendous calm and good management during a minor accident. If your tour starts at 9:30, come at 9, get a coffee around the corner, and get fitted for your bike. I'd start a multi-day visit to Rome with this; you look down across the city from the high level parkland and see domes sticking up here and there.

A Highlight of our time in Rome - This was a highlight of our trip to Rome! It's a great way to get a break from the busy tourist areas and explore sites that would be hard to see by foot/car. We were worried about biking in Rome traffic but they take you on side streets and bike trails for the most part so it wasn't bad at all. Our guide (Valencio I think?) shared a ton of information on the overall history of Rome and details on the Appian Way, Mausoleums, aqueducts, etc. He even brought printed visuals to better explain. We booked the long version of the tour with the catacombs and picnic included. Both were well worth it! You're not allowed to take pictures in the catacombs, but it was pretty incredible to see and a more extensive tour than I expected. My only warning is that you will have sore bums after biking on Roman cobblestones... Thankfully they give you a gel seat cover to alleviate this a bit. Other than that, the e-bikes make it an easy journey for anyone that knows how to ride.
