- Chiesa del Domine Quo Vadis - The first stop will be at the Domine Quo Vadis Church, where Jesus and Saint Peter are said to have met, and the miraculous footprints are still preserved. According to the apocryphal Acts of Peter, Saint Peter encountered the risen Christ here while fleeing persecution in Rome. Tradition holds that Peter asked, “Lord, where are you going?” (Latin: Domine, quo vadis?). Christ replied, “I am going to Rome to be crucified again.”
- Catacombs of Saint Callixtus - Entrance ticket and guided tour of the Catacombs of S. Callisto or S. Sebastiano (depending on availability) are included. The catacombs of St. Callixtus are among Rome’s largest and most significant. They originated around the mid-second century and are part of a cemetery complex covering 90 acres, with a network of galleries about 12 miles long, spread over four levels, more than twenty meters deep. Tens of martyrs, 16 popes, and many Christians were buried here.
- Circus of Maxentius - Returning to the Appian Way, we will stop and enter the Circus of Maxentius, the second-largest Roman circus, which was likely never used and served as the set for the film Ben Hur. The Circus is the best-preserved in the Rome area and is second in size only to the Circus Maximus. The only recorded games at the circus were its inaugural ones, believed to have been funerary in nature, held in honor of Maxentius’ son Valerius Romulus, who died in AD 309 at a very young age and was likely interred in the adjacent cylindrical tomb (Tomb of Romulus).
- Mausoleo di Cecilia Metella e Castrum Caetani - Parco Archeologico dell’Appia Antica - At the top of the hill, we will stop to explain the largest tomb on the Via Appia, the Tomb of Cecilia Metella, and the Caetani Castle (entrance not included, no ticket required). On the opposite side of the road, the guide will show you a unique example of Cistercian Gothic style: S. Nicola Church.
- Complesso di Capo di Bove - Parco Archeologico dell’Appia Antica - The private villa of the multi-millionaire philosopher and tutor of Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
- Villa dei Quintili e Santa Maria Nova - Parco Archeologico dell’Appia Antica - One of the largest residential areas in the suburbs of Rome, originally owned by brothers killed by Emperor Commodus, who is infamously remembered as one of the worst emperors in history. Entrance not included, no ticket required.
- Appian Way (Via Appia Antica) - If you look at the map, you’ll see incredible burial sites lining the Regina Viarum, including catacombs, churches, sepulchers, and mausoleums. Why are there so many burial sites here? This is one of the many questions that will be answered during our guided golf cart tour on the Appian Way.
- Appia Antica Archaeological Park - We will drive back to the starting point along the Ancient Appian Way.
