Highlights
  • Pompeii Archaeological Park - Pompeii was an ancient Roman city near modern Naples in the Campania region of Italy, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area (e.g. at Boscoreale, Stabiae), was buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Volcanic ash typically buried inhabitants who did not escape the lethal effects of the earthquake and eruption.

Well preserved - This place is awesome. They are so well preserved and well cared for. To learn about how people lived around and before Jesus’ time is truly a blessing.

Fascinating trip to the ruins of Pompeii - We travelled on 18.09.20024 from Rome to Pompeii via Naples. Actually this trip can be booked directly via GreyTours or via Get your Guide. As we availed a discount from our hotel for the booking via Grey Tour, so we booked through them. The tour organisation was perfect. The meeting point was opposite to the Republica metro station and was well connected. The bus driver and the tour guide were simply great. A brief tour within Naples was mesmerising despite not so perfect weather. Then there was a stopover for Neapolitan pizza. I recommend the pizza with mozzarella and ham. Then we had a wonderful tour within the ruins of Pompeii. The wonderful explanation at all important points by local guide who joined us from Naples was the highlight. Being a local guy, who grew up in the region, he was very emotional with all the details. This gave the tour a personal touch and made this trip memorable for us. We recommend to take this tour to everyone who is in Rome.

A well thought out and informative tour - I was impressed with the bus tour through Naples. The lunch was excellent and Pompeii was really well thought out. We saw a good variety of things and the guide knew where all the water fill ups were. Essential when it was so hot.

Worthwhile day trip from Rome - We took this trip while staying in Rome. This was a good way to visit Pompeii and see a little bit of Naples and the countryside without dedicating an overnight in Naples. Our bus guide and driver were fantastic, Marco the guide was enthusiastic and highly knowledgeable and Chiro the driver navigated through impossible turns with ease. The lunch was decent but we felt rushed; if you're looking for an authentic and leisurely Italian meal experience this is not it. Saw the highlights of Pompeii which was what we wanted and our guide was good. The quick tour of the shell jewelry factory was uninteresting; more time for lunch would've been better.

3 hour drive from Rome to Naples and Pompeii - The tour guide in Pompeii was very knowledgeable, but told us from the beginning to ‘keep up’ because he’d be going fast, that we could spend 3 days, not just 3 hours there. Unfortunately it’s very difficult surfaces to walk on and over half the group was older and had trouble keeping up. One lady who’d had a hip replaced went down pretty hard at one point. Fortunately only a large scrape on her arm as far as we know. The tour left Rome 30 mins late due to waiting for 2 ladies. The tour paid for food at our first stop to make it up to us…being 3 of the last off the bus - no choice of pastries for us and 2 weren’t coffee drinkers, so no drinks for them. Then the lunch that was provided was interesting - one table said ‘the best pizza they’d ever had’ but no one at our table didn’t like it - it was soggy and so was the salad. Because of the delay, we didn’t have 3 hours at Pompeii, we had 2 1/2 hours there, which we decided due to the difficult walking conditions, was enough time for us. I would say that the bus driver was amazing! Maneuvering the large bus in very tight spots safely! Even in the rain, I felt very safe and comfortable.

I wouldn't recommend - Tour around Pompeii wasn't great - We paid extra to be picked up from our hotel, was told to be outside 45 minutes before our pick up time which was 6:45am. We sat outside out hotel from 6am to finally be collected at 7:17am. So I wouldn't waste your money on this. The guy on our tour bus was very helpful and polite. We stopped 1hr 20mins in for a quick toilet break and some food. A quick tour around Naples on the coach and then off to some lunch in Pompeii, which was nice. You got paired with other guests on your table. The tour around Pompeii wasn't great and the guide was fairly boring and didn't show us a lot while there. I wish we had gone off and explored ourselves. The guide states 13hr day which I underestimated as it was a tiring 13hr day. I can't say I would recommend this. Possibly better to do Pompeii in your own time.
