The Colosseum is a quintessential symbol of Rome. This grand structure, with nearly 2,000 years of history, transports visitors back in time to experience life in the Roman Empire. During the Roman Empire, under the motto “Bread and Circuses,” the Roman Colosseum (then known as the Flavian Amphitheatre) hosted over 50,000 spectators for its grand spectacles. Designed by Bernini in the seventeenth century, it can accommodate over 300,000 people. The most striking feature of St. Peter’s Square, aside from its size, is the 284 columns and 88 pilasters that form a four-row colonnade around the square. Above the columns, 140 statues of saints, crafted in 1670 by Bernini’s disciples, stand proudly. At the center of the square, the obelisk and two fountains, one by Bernini (1675) and another by Maderno (1614), are prominent. The obelisk, standing 25 meters tall, was transported to Rome from Egypt in 1586.
