Highlights
  • San Pietro in Vincoli - Begin your journey near the Colosseum and take a pleasant walk through the surrounding neighborhood. In a delightful little piazza off Via Cavour, you will find the church of San Pietro in Vincoli (St. Peter in Chains). The church houses an important relic, the two sets of chains that bound St. Peter when he was imprisoned in Jerusalem and Rome. The highlight of this church is undoubtedly Michelangelo’s statue of Moses, an unfinished masterpiece by the Renaissance genius that was originally intended to be part of the tomb of Pope Julius II. The original plans included an enormous funeral monument with 47 statues, but it was never completed due to Michelangelo’s other commissions.

San Clemente - very cool underground exploration - We stayed in Trasteverde so it was a bit of a long walk, and yet you go by the Forem and Coliseum. San Clemente church is easy to find and the excavated areas below are astoundingly interesting. Both religious and just structural. Somehow seeing a still functional spring was so cool. You’re on your own more or less - no guide (at least we didn’t have one). Decent signage in multiple languages . We loved this.

Outstanding tour guide - We booked this private tour because we had a very short visit in Rome and wanted to be able to move about quickly. Martin was our tour guide and he was absolutely amazing! His knowledge was like a college history book. He took the time to get to know us a little and tailored the tour for our interests. I highly recommend this tour and make sure to ask for Martin.

The Best Kept Secret! - This was an absolute highlight of our time in Italy. Our guide was filled with knowledge, was a natural teacher -and had a great sense of humor. We learned aspects of world-renowned artists’ lives which we had never known. We made connections between history and fables, it was just captivating. And that’s saying a lot when you’re walking a few miles in record setting high temperatures! If we could we would have had this guide for our entire trip!
