- St. Peter’s Square - Designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini at the request of Pope Alexander VII, this magnificent square was completed in 1667 after eleven years of dedicated work.
The square features an oval space with three centers, surrounded by semicircular colonnades that connect to the basilica with extended arms. These colonnaded hemicycles open wide, symbolizing a grand embrace to Rome and the world.
Atop the colonnade, which consists of 284 columns arranged in four rows and standing 16 meters high, are 140 statues, each over three meters tall.
- St. Peter’s Basilica - The Papal Basilica of Saint Peter is a masterpiece of the Italian High Renaissance. Initially conceived in the 15th century by Pope Nicholas V and later by Pope Julius II, it was intended to replace the aging Old St. Peter’s Basilica, originally constructed in the fourth century by Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. The construction of the current basilica began on April 18, 1506, and was completed on November 18, 1626.
Primarily designed by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, and Carlo Maderno, with the piazza and fittings by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, St. Peter’s is celebrated as one of the most distinguished works of Italian Renaissance architecture and is the largest church in the world by interior measurement. It is considered one of the holiest Catholic shrines.
- Vatican Grottoes - Situated on the lower level of Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Grottoes comprise a series of vaults constructed between 1590 and 1591 to support the floor of the Renaissance building. Their origins are more ancient, stemming from a design modification presented to Pope Leo X by architect Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, following Raphael’s death in 1520.
- La Pieta - This sculpture, renowned for its superhuman beauty and perfection, was crafted in 1498 by a young Michelangelo, who was just twenty-three years old at the time. It was commissioned by French Cardinal Jean de Bilhères Lagraulas for his tomb in the Chapel of the King of France in Saint Peter’s, a chapel that no longer exists and was located on the southern side of the ancient Basilica.
- St. Peter Enthroned - This masterpiece depicts St. Peter seated, bearded, and dressed as a philosopher, with his left hand holding keys and his right hand raised in blessing.
