  • Sistine Chapel - The Sistine Chapel takes its name from Pope Sixtus IV della Rovere (pontiff from 1471 to 1484) who had the old Cappella Magna restored between 1477 and 1480. The 15th century decoration of the walls includes: the false drapes, the Stories of Moses, the Stories of Christ and the portraits of the Popes. It was executed by a team of painters made up initially of Pietro Perugino, Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Cosimo Rosselli. On the Ceiling Pier Matteo d’Amelia painted a starry sky. The work on the frescoes began in 1481 and was concluded in 1482. This is also the date of the following works in marble: the screen, the choir stalls (where the choristers took their places), and the pontifical coat of arms over the entrance door.

Private Vatican Tour - This is the tour you want to take! It was the absolute highlight of our five week holiday, and the event we still talk about the most. There is so much to see and experience at the Vatican that it would be easy to be overwhelmed. We found that learning about the history of the location, site, and development was a fascinating insight into the actual buildings and art. It also helps that our guide (Nicola) is insightful, experienced, and fun. While it is difficult to select just one element, the experience of being in the Sistine Chapel was improved by all the information he shared with us prior to arrival. The early access is worth it--you'll appreciate that the chapel is not overflowing with people--and having a deeper understanding of the frescoes and art. Absolutely the BEST part of our time in Rome.
