Vatican Museums - The Vatican Museums house numerous artworks that belonged to various Popes, showcasing immense artistic beauty. Here are some highlights of the Vatican Museums: the Greek Cross Room, the Gallery of Maps, the Gallery of Tapestries, Raphael Rooms, and more! These collections have been amassed over centuries through acquisitions, donations, commissions, confiscations, and often serendipitous discoveries from underground Rome and beyond.
-
Gallery of Maps - The Gallery of Maps is a magnificent corridor where geography and history merge seamlessly. Created in the late 16th century, the room is dedicated to custom maps depicting all of Italy. One side of the 393-foot long gallery features two representations of the country: one from the Imperial Roman Era and the other from the 1500s. Each map illustrates political events, religious roles, and significant battles. The ceiling is equally impressive, adorned with frescoes depicting episodes and miraculous events of apostles, saints, and martyrs, linked to the maps below.
-
Sistine Chapel - Marvel at Michelangelo’s awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel! The most renowned part of the Sistine Chapel ceiling is Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam. This scene is adjacent to the Creation of Eve, located at the center of the room, and the Congregation of the Waters, closer to the altar.
-
St. Peter’s Basilica - If the Vatican Museums’ grandeur is overwhelming, St. Peter’s Basilica elevates the “wow factor” even further. The vast interiors are truly awe-inspiring. Measuring 613 feet in length, 85 feet in width, and 147 feet in height, its construction began in 1506 and took 120 years to complete. Admire Michelangelo’s unparalleled Pietà masterpiece and head to the center-right nave to see Bernini’s bronze Baldachin, which stands directly above St. Peter’s tomb.
-
St. Peter’s Square - St. Peter’s Square is one of the most iconic (and certainly one of the most sacred!) sites in the world. Designed in the 17th century by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Rome’s foremost architect at the time, it was commissioned by Pope Alexander VIII to highlight St. Peter’s significance as “the gateway to Heaven.” Bernini masterfully fulfilled this request by dividing the square into a smaller trapezoidal area near the Basilica and a larger oval section, together forming a ground plan resembling a giant keyhole.
