Canal Grande - The Grand Canal is the main thoroughfare in Venice, navigable by ferry or gondola.

The Grand Canal splits the city center into two sections. It predates Venice, which was constructed along its path. One end of the canal opens into the lagoon near the Santa Lucia railway station, while the other end leads into the basin at San Marco. The canal forms a large reverse-S shape through Venice’s central districts (sestieri). It stretches 3.8 km (2.4 mi) in length, ranges from 30 to 90 m (98 to 295 ft) in width, and has an average depth of 5 meters (16 feet).

Piazza San Marco - Piazza San Marco, commonly known in English as St Mark’s Square, is Venice’s main public square, often referred to simply as la Piazza (“the Square”). All other urban spaces in the city, except the Piazzetta and the Piazzale Roma, are called campi (“fields”). The Piazzetta (“little Piazza/Square”) extends the Piazza towards the lagoon at its southeast corner. Together, these spaces form the social, religious, and political heart of Venice.

Ponte di Rialto - After lunch, head to the magnificent Rialto Bridge, where you can enjoy a splendid view of the Grand Canal and explore the ancient Rialto market. Then, visit the historic Panoramic Terrace of Fontego dei Tedeschi, now home to some of the most famous brand shops, offering the best view of Venice.

Venice boasts around 354 bridges, all originally built for transportation but now adding to the city’s beauty. The Rialto Bridge is the oldest of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal. Connecting the sestieri (districts) of San Marco and San Polo, it has been rebuilt several times, initially constructed with two old ships and later as a wooden structure. The current version, dating back to 1591, is the one we see today.

Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute - In the morning, visit Santa Maria della Salute, a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica located at Punta della Dogana in the Dorsoduro sestiere of Venice. This church was built in honor of the Virgin Mary, who was believed to have saved the city from the plague, replacing a religious complex that was destroyed. It was completed in the second half of the 17th century.

It stands on the narrow finger of Punta della Dogana, between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal, at the Bacino di San Marco, making the church visible when entering Piazza San Marco from the water.

Ponte dell’Accademia - The Ponte dell’Accademia is one of only four bridges that span the Grand Canal in Venice. It crosses near the southern end of the canal and is named after the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, which was housed in the Scuola della Carità from 1807 to 2004, along with the Gallerie dell’Accademia, which remains there. The bridge connects the sestieri of Dorsoduro and San Marco.

Scala Contarini del Bovolo - The Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo (also known as the Palazzo Contarini Minelli dal Bovolo) is a small palace in Venice, best known for its external multi-arch spiral staircase, the Scala Contarini del Bovolo (literally, “of the snail”). The building has undergone many transformations due to its various owners.

The building is equidistant from Rialto, the economic center of Venice, and Saint Mark, the political heart of the Republic.
