-
Fontana del Tirreno - We will pause to admire the magnificent fountains of the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic, crafted alongside Sacconi, the designer of the Altare della Patria. These fountains are perfectly symmetrical, symbolizing the two major seas that border Italy: the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Adriatic Sea.
-
Fontana delle Tartarughe - As we continue our tour, we will encounter the Turtle Fountain. Constructed between 1581 and 1588 based on a design by Giacomo della Porta, this fountain is notable for its four bronze turtles (hence the name) interacting with dolphins, positioned on shell-shaped basins.
-
Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi - We will reach Piazza Navona, one of Rome’s most stunning squares. The square is particularly famous for its three fountains, the most significant being the Fountain of the Four Rivers, designed by Bernini and built between 1648 and 1651.
-
Trevi Fountain - Our next stop will be the iconic Trevi Fountain, arguably the most famous fountain globally. Inaugurated in 1762, it is closely linked to the Acqua Vergine aqueduct. The fountain’s creation was commissioned by Pope Clement XII, who held a contest for its design, won by architect Nicola Salvi.
-
Vicus Caprarius – the City of Water - The final, yet equally important stop is Vicus Caprarius, or the City of Water, located at Vicolo del Puttarello 25, 00187 Rome, Italy. This underground aqueduct, situated beneath the Trevi Fountain, was discovered in 1999 in a cinema basement. Inside, a water tank connected to the Vergine aqueduct can be seen.
