Setting Sail to Culebra

The sun was just beginning to rise as I found myself at the marina, ready to embark on a new adventure. The anticipation of exploring Culebra Island and its famed Flamenco Beach had me buzzing with excitement. As a former professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours in the ocean, but there’s always something magical about discovering a new slice of paradise. The crew, led by Captain Luis, welcomed us aboard with warm smiles and a sense of camaraderie that set the tone for the day.

The boat ride to Culebra was an adventure in itself. The sea was a bit choppy, and I found myself bouncing around on the top deck, holding onto the rails with a grin plastered on my face. It reminded me of the thrill of catching a wave, the unpredictability of the ocean beneath you. For those prone to seasickness, a bit of Dramamine might be a good idea, but for me, it was all part of the fun.

Discovering Flamenco Beach

Arriving at Flamenco Beach was like stepping into a postcard. The white sand stretched out before us, and the crystal-clear waters beckoned. We were the first boat to arrive, and the beach was blissfully quiet. With no docking area, we swam to shore, a refreshing start to our island exploration. My partner, not the strongest swimmer, was a bit taken aback by the depth, but the crew quickly provided a life vest, ensuring everyone felt comfortable and safe.

With two hours to explore, we wandered along the beach, taking in the stunning scenery. The tranquility of the morning, the gentle lapping of the waves, and the vibrant colors of the island were a feast for the senses. It was a reminder of why I love island life so much—the simplicity, the beauty, the connection to nature.

Snorkeling and Beyond

After a leisurely morning, it was time to test our snorkel gear and dive into the underwater world. Juan, one of the crew members and a marine biologist, guided us through the waters, sharing his knowledge of the marine life we encountered. While some in our group spotted stingrays and turtles, my partner and I were content with the colorful coral and schools of fish that danced around us.

The snorkeling site was about 30 feet deep, and most of us used floating devices to stay buoyant. It was a serene experience, floating above the vibrant underwater landscape, feeling the gentle push and pull of the ocean. After snorkeling, there was an opportunity to jump off the second deck of the boat into the open water—a thrilling way to cap off the aquatic adventure.

As we made our way back to Ceiba, the crew offered drinks and snacks, a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration. Reflecting on the experience, I realized it was one of the highlights of my time in Puerto Rico. The crew’s dedication to safety and enjoyment ensured that everyone had a memorable day, and I left with a renewed appreciation for the beauty of the Caribbean and the adventures it holds.
