Fort Shirley - Fort Shirley is part of the Cabrits National Park in the north of Dominica and can be considered Dominica’s most important historic site and was the scene of the famous revolt of the 8th West India Regiment in 1802.
The British undertook most of the construction of the Fort but the French made significant additions during their occupation of Dominica from 1778 – 1784. Together they amassed a garrison comprising one fort, seven gun batteries, seven cisterns, powder magazines, ordnance storehouses, bakeries, iron forge, barracks and other officers’ quarters to house and provide for over 600 men on regular duty along with their support staff of artisans and slaves.

Excellent trip - Our guide Tiffany was excellent, she tailored the tour to the weather conditions so we didn’t get rained on at all. She was very friendly and informative. The itinerary was very diverse and we felt as if we had seen a lot of variety across the island. Definitely recommend this tour

Terrific experience! - This was a wonderful excursion! Easy to find and saw the entire side of the island driving to the North. Cold Soufriere was a gem, I felt like it was in the middle of nowhere and it was beautiful. Fort Shirley was a lot of walking uphill in the sun, but we learned a lot. The lunch our tour guide, Leonard, picked was just amazing!!! The river ride was nice and peaceful. All in all, we had a blast and highly recommend.

Waitukubuli Tours: Dive, Hike and Relax Beneath the Surface - Waitukubuli Tours
In July, I did two tours with Waitukubuli:
The Roseau City Tour with Botanical Gardens & Trafalgar Falls
& the Indian River, Cold Soufriere & Fort Shirley (Northern Excursion)
I took these tours during the low season, when there were few tourists around; Waitukubuli was kind enough to accommodate a solo traveller and to go ahead with these tours which usually operate with a certain minimum number of people. They did so with enthusiasm - eager to share some of the highlights of Dominica’s landscape and culture. The tours Tiffany and Lennard provided didn’t feel like some rote package tour – but, rather, it they an individualized and personal touch, which was very refreshing.
There is much to learn on The Roseau City Tour – the history is quite fascinating, and has it’s own unique story – which differs quite a bit from other nearby islands. There are many architectural features of this history that remain – despite hurricane Maria’s destruction. On the tour you get a sense of the local flavour of the city, its multiculturalism and evolution. The botanical garden is worth seeing as it has a few memorable features and trees. Beautiful nature is close to Roseau, and with the Trafalgar waterfalls, and the landscape and small villages you see on the way there and back. The tour is an abbreviation, but with so much packed into it, it’s a perfect introduction to Dominica – and it whets ones appetite to experience and learn more. It’s a tremendous value, in all senses of the word. Similarly, the Indian River, Cold Soufriere and Fort Shirley is a full day of differing experiences – it’s like getting three tours in one. While Indian River is on the tourist circuit, I felt it was already too exploited to impart the sense of adventure that it seems to promise..but it’s still a fun excursion – just temper your expectations. Fort Shirley is a must for those interested in military/ colonial history – and it provides a starting point for a possible return to explore more of the trails leading to lesser travelled fortifications and remnants of the French and British presence. By being on this peninsula, you can really understand why Dominica was of such strategic importance. The highlight of this tour for me was the cold Soufriere; the hot and cold springs of this volcanic island are one of its defining features; enjoying the springs was really restorative, particularly because the various springs I visited were still quite ‘natural’ and down to earth – not overrun with people and not overwhelmed by buildings or structures that would interfere with the experience of being in nature – like so many other hot springs are in other parts of the world. Thank you Tiffany and Lennard for the good vibes and sharing your love of your country.
Dominica seems right on the cusp of becoming a popular tourist destination - similar to Costa Rica 15 years ago. You can see the development happening - a mega-airport being build, larger marinas being planned; go sooner, rather than later while you can still 'feel' the island and its people.

Great Day in Dominica - Our guide, Leonnard Green, was outstanding, well organized and gave us the perfect day in Dominica. He was wonderful at finding things that would interest our younger family members. We enjoyed all three activities - the fort, the volcano cauldron and the rowboat up the river. We all enjoyed the lunch Leonnard had arranged in advance so it was all ready when we arrived. We all now feel we have a new friend in Dominica.

Great day up north - Had the best day with leannard. Explored the north part of the island, he was so informative and fun. The trip up the Indian River and to the bush bar was great as well. Our guide went above and beyond, showing us some things around where we were staying as well. Highly recommend.

River cruise to relax. - An absolutely fantastic trip to the mangroves. The boat captains steer their boats through the calm waters. The green nature shows itself at its best. The film set of Pirates of the Caribbean, the witch Calypso's hut, makes for great photos. The gentle journey through the waters past the trees and animals is not to be missed. It is also pleasantly cool under the canopy of leaves.

Outstanding Guide, Interesting Tour - Our guide Tiffany knows the island really well and does an outstanding job of sharing the culture, history, and natural beauty. She tailored the tour to our interests, had great answers to every question we had, and she shared enough personal stories to help us understand what modern life is like on the island. She's exceptionally good and we really enjoyed our day with her.
The river tour was the highlight of the day. Our small group (4 people) boarded a skiff for a relaxing and quiet trip about a mile up the river. Unfortunately I didn't get the name of our "skiff-master", but he was very familiar with the river wildlife and pointed out many interesting critters.

An entertaining and successful experience - The tour first took us to Cold Soufrière, then to Fort Shirley and finally to the Indian River. Our guides were super nice, friendly and very competent. We were very lucky to be just the two of us, normally up to 6 people can take part. We benefited from very individual and intensive support. Everything was very well planned and prepared. We can particularly recommend the trip on the Indian River to anyone who would like to follow in the footsteps of Jack Sparrow. With a bit of luck you can see not only crabs but even iguanas on the shore.

Wonderful day with Waitukubuli Adventure Tour Company. - The trip was great from beginning to end. Leonard picked us up and the good time began. We had a scenic drive to cold Soufriere. At cold Soufriere we saw hummingbirds, parrots, picked wild raspberries that were yummy and enjoyed the cold springs. The short hike was wonderful and full of natural pleasure. We then went to the Fort which is a well preserved historical site. From there we went for a ride up the Indian River. We stopped for lunch at a local restaurant. We enjoyed homemade rum punch on our return ride home. All in all it was a five star day with us looking at returning soon. Many thanks to Leonard and the Waitukubuli Adventure Tour Company.

Genuine and Real - Our tour guide, Tiffany, created a great experience for us right from the beginning. Although we were cruising with Oceania, our daughter set up this private trip with Waitukubuli for the four of us - my husband and I and our daughter and son-in-law. Tiffany quickly assessed our disparate abilities and interests and focused on those to make an enjoyable trip for all of us. Since our ship was anchored next to Fort Shirley, we started from there, traveled to Cold Soufriere for a short hike to the cold geysers, picked up a delicious local lunch to eat along with Tiffany's homemade rum punch and some locally made sodas - all accompanied with humor and delightful information. Following lunch, we joined Ajohli, our river guide and rower for the Indian River trip. Both Tiffany and Ajohli provided anecdotes and tales of the local region, information about the birds, plants, and water life along the way and always aware of our comfort and what our interests and lives aside from being tourists were like. They had no canned script or agenda - were genuine, real natives of Dominica who seemed to love their island.
