History Explored! - Mount Tarawera erupted on June 10, 1886, destroying the village of Te Wairoa and the nearby Pink and White Terraces. We got to see this museum and site of the local hotel that tells the story of that fateful night. Our Kirra Tour led by Jake M. was met by Pam, great granddaughter of the original owner who took us through a synopsis of the events. We walked through the property viewing artifacts and buildings damaged in the eruption. We also walked to a beautiful waterfall on the property. Highly recommend this stop!

Mesmerized - Pam was very knowledgeable and explained the history very clearly. You could almost imagine what the site was like decades ago. Such a disaster to the village and the people when the volcano erupted in 1886. The water falls were spectacular, so mesmerizing. Grateful we visited this site and would highly recommend it to others.

Buried Village - Interesting to learn the learning the history and see the relics. Waterfall was beautiful did the walk down the steep stairs and up the steep terrain to get out but well eprth it for those who he a reasonable fitness level. Proper shoes are suggested for the waterfall walk as the ground can be pretty uneven.

A great walk through history of Te Wairoa - I really appreciated the welcoming manner of the staff at reception. It was pleasing to be greeted with my surname when I gave my first name. I also appreciated the depth of history that the beautiful lady at reception gave us. The museum at the beginning was a great way to provide context on the areas that we visited. Although a sad event in our history, the visit enabled me to reflect on the privileges that I experience today. Thank you for the experience. Ngā mihi

A local recommendation, not to be missed. - We only found out about the Buried Village through a local recommendation……and we have been passing on the word since our visit! The village was buried by volcanic eruptions in the late 19th century. While there has not been a huge amount excavated, it is worth seeing and the walk is worthwhile, don’t miss the waterfall. However the small museum, and the helpful and knowledgeable staff, do a great job of explaining the story. Thank you.

Great activity. - For anyone interested in a bit of history on the tragic eruption of Mt Tarawera, then this activity is a must. The visit includes a museum which contains a wealth of information on the eruption and its devastating effects on neighbouring villages, including Te Wairoa, and their inhabitants. One can also go for the extensive walk through what's left of the village, dug up from the layers of volcanic ash. This is not Pompeii but emotionally moving all the same. The track also takes visitors to a beautiful waterfall.

Rotorua weekend - As a kid my parents came here often with overseas visitors. I have not been here for over 30 yrs and it was quite nostalgic. Lots of memories. It is a great part of the history of the Tarawera eruption in 1886. Good walk. Beautiful waterfall. Not an easy walk but if u can do it would recommend it. Great staff, informative and friendly. Bookme guide cheaper rates but I didn't think it was too pricey. The cuppa at the end was appreciated

We were disappointed with... - We were disappointed with this tour. The museum is interesting and informative, but the tour is self led and dull, with little to see. It needed more graphics to help us to imagine the sites that were buried, particularly the strata that people travelled to see historically. The waterfall was incredible, well worth the steep climb
