Rovaniemi Snowtrain - Snowtrain safari in the Lappish forest near the Apukka resort is another good winter adventure to try. The excursion includes, guide, winter clothing, snow train ride, hot drink with BBQ sausages. The snow train consists of large cabins with small heaters being pulled by a Snowcat machine that seats about 10 people in each cabin. Couple of things to bear in mind, listening to the Apukka Adventure people who hand out the winter clothing kit, they know what they're talking about to keep warm. You might be lucky and see the Auroras, but no guarantee. The BBQ takes place in a tent/teepee with an open fire, you will also smell like a BBQ at the end of the evening, but worth it!

Success — Loved it! - We had a successful hunt, and Minna our guide was terrific. We were prepared to possibly see nothing and just enjoy darkness, stars, and a campfire. But we saw the auroras before we even left and continued to watch them grow as we got to our lookout spot. Minna explained all about how they worked, had an app to see if/when they might get brighter, and took pictures of us that are memories for a lifetime. Heartily recommend!

Good trip into the wilderness - This was a nice trip out to the wilderness to try see the Aurora. Our guide was really informative and told us stories of the legends of the Aurora. You can't see anything from the train when driving to the location but it's heated and cosy. When you get there you can toast some sausages and have a hot drink. You can sit in the tent or outside, but it is quite cold outside. Our guide was great and stayed longer than planned so we could catch a glimpse of them.

Northern Lights are a gamble but Apukka gives you a nice experience - just stay warm! - While we didn't luck out and see aurora, the staff on this trip was kind and fun and thoughtful. You walk about 10 minutes to the "train", which is as depicted in the photos - cars pulled by a snow cat - and then are driven through the snowy forest, eventually coming to a clearing where there are two big kata (Sami tipis) that have warm bonfires over which you roast sausages and marshmallows. The train cars are heated, too, but we were there in a period of serious cold, even for the area - it was -20C - so some of us did get painfully chilled, even with the precautions they took. So, dress warmer than you think, bring along handwarmers and toe warmers - and definitely make use of the free and wonderfully warm snowsuits they lend you! Also, just understand how the Northern Lights work - they are a rare phenomenon, and by definition that means you probably won't see them.

Absolutely terrible don’t bother! - Absolutely flippin awful! Don’t waste your money! Walk about 15 mins first in pitch black, black ice with hardly any light to actually get to the train which was rickety and we were on it 20 mins to then face another death trap of a walk to get to a tent. We were that bored I actually fell asleep!!! Don’t bother

Worst experience ever - We booked this tour for our family of 4, 2 adults and 2 kids, and the experience was bad from the beginning. As we got there, my young daughter got that scared when the guide told her she could die over there if she wasn't wearing the right clothes, that she refused to go to the tour. Have to say, he was right about the clothes and we had the thermal overalls with us to use , but even after putting them on, she was that scare of the guide and the idea of dying, that we couldn't manage to convince her to go. That was the end of the tour for her and my husband, who stayed with her .We decided I was still gonna go with my 12 years old son. Thinks just got worse after that. The train is not a train, just a carriage, and to get there we had to go walking and cross the main road , in the dark. Once we went into the carriage, we drove for about 15 minutes to the forrest , where we went down and had to walk for another 15-20 min in the middle of the snow and through the forrest to get to the hut , with only a headlight from the guide and using the lights on our mobiles. As the activity is recommended for families, and in the photos the train is beside the hut,we weren't expecting that, and my 12 years just panicked. There is no explanation at all when you book the tour, and the photos are misleading, with a proper snow train and beside the hut. He got so scared that he just sat down on the snow and refused to move when the group stopped to take pictures. It was -16 C ,so he got painfully cold and couldn't even move to go near the fire when we finally got to the hut. At no stage the guide came and asked if he was OK or offer any help, and when I realised that he was having a proper panick attack and we needed to leave, I was told I would need to bring him back to the train on my own as the guide couldn't leave the group behind. I understand he had to do a tour for everybody, but I can't understand how they thought that to send a child on distress, with a full panick attack through a forrest covered in snow, with a temperature of -16 c and pitch black, having only the light on my phone was considered safe. We had to stop several times because he was petrified, and when we eventually got to the train, had to wait for almost another hour for them to come back. I don't blame them for the whole situation, but I'm so upset a child was put in danger because their bad organisation and the lack of empathy of the person in charge. These tours are not cheap, and I hope they look into a back-up plan in the future so no other child has to suffer how he did. The guide never came to see if we got to the carriage OK, never asked how he was feeling, nothing. A total disaster and the worst experience ever.

Disappointed - I booked this tour with pickup service, but instead of picking us up at the hotel( Santa Claus Village), they chose a bus stop 300 meters away. It’s very strange. I will explains my awful experience Despite waiting for over 20 minutes in freezing temperatures, we called them and they told us it must be your mistake and you wouldn’t find the correct place , but this was not the case, and then they told us that their bus come at the exact pickup time and left (one minute later the pick up hour) because no one was there When we suggested taking a taxi to join the tour, they refused. Our conclusion is that this is a scam, and there's no real excursion. Avoid them if you want to enjoy your stay.

We were scammed by Apukka Adventures/Resort - We had a terrible experience thanks to Apukka Adventures. We were spending some days in the Santa Claus Village and decided to book for our group of 8 people the Aurora activity with Apukka Adventures/Resort. They had to pick us up at 8pm in a meeting point nearby the Santa Claus Village reception. Unfortunately, when we arrived there just at 8pm, the bus was not there. We waited for some minutes, looking around to see whether they were waiting for us somewhere else and finally we called them. We were shocked when they said that they had already left at 8pm! (I suspect that they were earlier, considering that we were there on time). Anyway I asked them why it was possible that they left without checking that 8 people were missing, why they did not call and I also said that we would take a taxi to go to the resort. Regarding the first point, I did not receive any answer, about the second, they said that they have the policy of not calling clients! (It does not say that in the Terms and Conditions of the reservation) and related with the third point, she declined the option saying that we were already late. The next day we exchanged some emails with the supervisor to see whether we could find a solution as we did not do anything wrong. The answer was simply that no. He ignored my points why they did not realized that a group of 8 were missing or why they did not call and simply said that the bus was there between 7.59 and 8.01pm (seriously?) and other clients were able to take the bus but not evidence of anything attached in the email. Clearly it seems that Apukka does not really care about clients and I would not recommend any family to risk their holidays with them.

Worst experience - Awful experience. Team was super disorganized and unprepared. More than 40 people in the group and the campfire was not sufficient to warm everybody. Even the hot drinks were cold. I got a terrible flu after the activity. The train is old and totally covered in snow, which means you dont see anything, and the place they take you to see the autora is like a parking lot and you dont move from there. There is no hunting. The activity is to sit in the freezing parking lot and wait to see something if you are lucky. And in the end, the bus that takes you back to the city center was 30 minutes late and we had to wait in -10•C. They drop you in city center at midnight and there is no taxis at this time. We had to walk 20 minutes in the extreme cold. It was the worst experience of the trip. DO NOT BOOK THIS TOUR.
