The main highlight of this natural wonder is the expansive labyrinthine limestone cave, featuring numerous rock formations, stalactites, stalagmites, and an abundance of ceiling pockets. A knowledgeable guide will share the fascinating history of the caves, recounting the stories of those who have utilized them over the years. Evidence such as cave paintings, tools, and pottery fragments suggests that the original inhabitants were the Taino Indians, who likely used the caves for shelter. The subsequent known occupants were the Spanish, who, during the British invasion of Jamaica in 1655, sought refuge in the caves to evade capture. An underground tunnel connects the caves to the sands of Runaway Bay, and it is believed that the Spanish used this tunnel in their attempt to escape the island and flee to Cuba. Additionally, runaway slaves have also used the caves as a hiding place from their former masters.
