This natural wonder’s main attraction is a vast, maze-like limestone cavern populated by various rock formations, stalactites, stalagmites, and a multitude of overhead cavity openings. A guide will enlighten you about the fascinating history of the caves, recounting how they’ve been utilized by different societies over time. The caves were first inhabited by the Taino Indians, evidenced by the cave paintings, tools, and shards of pottery found within. Later, the caves served as a refuge for the Spanish during the British invasion of Jamaica in 1655. An underground passage connecting the caves to Runaway bay’s sand supposedly served as the Spaniards’ escape route to exit the island and flee to Cuba. Runaway slaves also reportedly sought refuge in these caves from their previous owners.
