Situated in Eastern Rwanda, Akagera National Park shares its border with Tanzania. At present, the management of the park is handled by African Parks who have done an exemplary job in conserving it. In earlier times, conflicts often arose between the locals and the park, a problem rectified by fencing a portion of the park and promoting community tours. These tours encourage tourists to engage with the local community and provide mutual benefits. Akagera National Park, the only Savannah Park in Rwanda, houses a multitude of mammals such as Lions, Elephants, Giraffes, Hippos, Kobs, Zebras, Bushbucks, Waterbucks, and lately, Black Rhinos which were brought from South Africa. This addition has helped regain its status as a ‘big 5’ park as it once was. The park also provides a natural habitat to a wide variety of bird species within its woodlands, swamps, lakes, and Savannah habitats.
