Akagera National Park is situated in the northeast of Rwanda, along the border with Tanzania. Established in 1934, a significant portion of the park was converted into farmland, and in 1997, its size was reduced from over 2,500 sq km (nearly 10% of Rwanda’s surface area) to its current size of 1,122 sq km. Since 2010, a partnership with African Parks has helped Akagera regain its former splendor.

The national park is named after the Akagera River, which flows along its eastern boundary and feeds into a network of lakes, the largest being Lake Ihema. The forest-edged lakes, papyrus swamps, savannah, plains, and rolling highlands make Akagera one of the most picturesque reserves in Africa. It boasts exceptional biodiversity and is the largest protected wetland in central Africa.
