Akagera National Park - Upon arrival at the airport, guests will be warmly greeted by our driver guides who will provide information about the safari. The journey begins with a Kigali city tour, including a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial and local markets. After enjoying lunch, guests will travel to Akagera in Eastern Rwanda, check in at the lodge, relax, and prepare for the next day’s adventures.
Exploring Akagera National Park
Akagera National Park - Rise early for breakfast before embarking on a sunrise game drive, offering a glimpse of herbivores grazing in the morning light. This thrilling activity provides breathtaking views of the African Big Five: Elephant, Lion, Rhino, Buffalo, and Leopard, along with other wildlife such as giraffes, antelopes, and birds, creating unforgettable memories. In the afternoon, enjoy a boat cruise on Lake Ihema, offering spectacular views of crocodiles, hippos, water birds, and other wildlife. Return to the lodge for relaxation, dinner, and an overnight stay.
Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park - After breakfast, guests will check out of the lodge and meet their guide for a 5-hour journey through lush hills and stunning landscapes to Volcanoes National Park, home to the majestic mountain gorillas. Upon arrival, check in at the lodge, relax, and prepare for the next day’s activities.
Gorilla Trekking
Volcanoes National Park - Following an early breakfast, guests will head to the park headquarters at Kinigi for a briefing on mountain gorilla trekking by the park warden and rangers. Equipped with trekking gear, water, and a packed lunch, guests will embark on an exciting trek through the jungle forests of Volcanoes National Park, which may take 1-7 hours depending on the gorillas’ movements. Upon encountering these magnificent primates, guests will enjoy a rewarding hour observing and learning about the gorillas as they interact, play, mate, feed, build nests, and groom each other. This thrilling experience offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity during an African safari.
Golden Monkey Tracking and Iby’iwacu Cultural Village Experience
Volcanoes National Park - After an early breakfast, guests will head to the park headquarters for a briefing on tracking the endangered golden monkeys. The tracking trails lead into the Bamboo forest, taking 1-4 hours to find these rare creatures. Along the way, guests will enjoy views of other primates like red-tailed monkeys, vervet monkeys, black & white monkeys, and colorful birds. Upon meeting the golden monkeys, guests will have an hour to observe their interactions, play, feeding, and grooming. In the evening, guests will immerse themselves in the customs, traditions, and cultures of the local community at Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, engaging with locals and experiencing traditional activities such as cattle milking, arts and crafts, local beer brewing, and honey harvesting.
Dian Fossey Gravesite Hike
Karisoke Research Center - Dian Fossey Camp - After breakfast, guests will embark on an exhilarating 2-4 hour hike to Dian Fossey’s gravesite. Dian Fossey was an American primatologist renowned for her extensive study of mountain gorillas. This trek offers insights into her legacy in gorilla conservation. Afterward, guests will return to the lodge for relaxation and an overnight stay.
Transfer to Lake Kivu
Lake Kivu - After breakfast, guests will check out of the lodge and depart Volcanoes National Park for Lake Kivu. Arriving early, guests will enjoy lunch at the lodge and then relax by the lake, taking in the fresh breeze, stunning vistas, and white sand beaches.
Transfer to Nyungwe National Park
Nyungwe Forest National Park - Following a delightful breakfast, guests will enjoy a boat ride on Lake Kivu, offering scenic views of hippos, crocodiles, birds, and other wildlife along the lake’s banks. Later, guests will embark on a 4-hour journey to Nyungwe Forest National Park, home to 13 primate species. Check-in at the lodge will be one hour.
Chimpanzee Tracking and Canopy Walk Experience
Nyungwe Forest National Park - After breakfast, guests will gather at Uwinka Reception for a briefing on chimpanzee tracking rules. Accompanied by park rangers and guides, guests will embark on a 1-4 hour trek through the forest to encounter chimpanzees, often seen leaping between trees, chattering, and laughing. Upon finding these fascinating primates, guests will spend an hour capturing photos and videos of this life-changing experience.
Nyungwe Canopy Walk - In the afternoon, guests will embark on a walking trail leading to the Canopy Walk, a 50-meter-long swinging bridge suspended among the trees. This offers a bird’s-eye view of the captivating rainforest, with opportunities to spot wildlife below. Guests will then return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Transfer Back to Kigali
Kigali City Market - After breakfast, guests will embark on a 6-hour drive through beautiful landscapes, farmlands, local markets, and communities, arriving in Kigali to connect to the airport for departure.
