The town itself has its charms, including a quaint square, but it doesn’t boast much in the way of historical or architectural significance due to the devastation of the 1755 earthquake. The town features a bustling harbor, a selection of bars and restaurants near the square, a modest supermarket, and notably, a beautiful beach that draws many visitors. The local eateries are known for their extensive selection of fresh seafood. However, it’s the town’s history, strategic location, and nearby attractions that make Sagres a noteworthy destination.

In the 15th century, Sagres was a hub of global significance, largely thanks to Prince Henry the Navigator. He established his residence and famous navigation school here, which produced renowned navigators like Fernao de Magalhaes (Magellan), Pedro Alvares Cabral, and Vasco da Gama, whose influence on the world persists. The first caravels set sail from nearby Belixe, marking the beginning of Portugal’s Age of Discoveries and shaping the nation’s identity.

The most visible remnant of Henry’s era in modern Sagres is the Fortaleza de Sagres, perched on the dramatic Ponta de Sagres north of the town. The fort’s massive 17th-century walls are only partially standing, with a grand entrance arch as the sole point of entry.
