Conquering the Night: A Thrilling Ascent of Mount Sinai
When the call of adventure beckoned, I couldn’t resist the allure of a night climb up Mount Sinai. Join me as I recount the thrilling ascent, the breathtaking sunrise, and the historic descent to St. Catherine’s Monastery.
The Midnight Ascent
The night was still young as we embarked on our journey to the legendary Mount Sinai. Our group of thrill-seekers, always in search of the next adrenaline rush, was buzzing with excitement. The air-conditioned minibus was a welcome comfort as we settled in for the three-hour drive from Sharm El Sheikh to Saint Catherine. Our guide, Halim, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing tales of the region’s rich history as we cruised through the night. But soon, the hum of the engine lulled us into a restful slumber, conserving our energy for the climb ahead.
The journey was punctuated by a brief stop at a convenient store, Take 5, where we stretched our legs and stocked up on snacks. The clean facilities and the array of refreshments were a pleasant surprise, a small oasis in the desert night. As we continued, the anticipation grew, and the sight of the icons near Saint Catherine’s Monastery was a fascinating prelude to the adventure that awaited us.
The Climb to the Summit
As the clock struck 2 AM, we met our Bedouin guide, Eid, at the base of Mount Sinai. His warm demeanor and extensive knowledge were immediately reassuring. The climb began on the camel road, a gentle ascent that soon gave way to steeper terrain. The path was a mix of loose rocks and dusty soil, a familiar challenge for someone like me who has tackled mountains and cliffs around the globe.
The night air was crisp, and the stars above seemed to guide our way as we ascended. The tea shops along the route offered brief respites, where we could catch our breath and savor the moment. The camaraderie among our group was palpable, each of us driven by the promise of witnessing the sunrise from the summit.
The final stretch, the infamous 750 steps, was a test of endurance. Each step was unique, a puzzle of stone blocks that twisted and turned up the mountain. The climb was demanding, but the thrill of the challenge was invigorating. As we reached the summit, the horizon began to glow with the first light of dawn, a breathtaking reward for our efforts.
A Historic Descent
The descent was a careful dance, each step requiring focus to avoid the slippery gravel. Eid’s guidance was invaluable, his stories and insights enriching the journey down. As we returned to the base, the sun now fully risen, we were handed back to Halim for the next chapter of our adventure.
St. Catherine’s Monastery was a treasure trove of history and spirituality. The ancient walls and sacred sites, including Moses’s well and the burning bush, were awe-inspiring. Halim’s explanations brought the history to life, and the chance to rest in the shade with a cup of tea was a welcome respite.
As we made our way back to the minibus, the sense of accomplishment was overwhelming. The climb, the history, the camaraderie—it was an experience that would linger in our memories long after we returned to the bustling streets of Sharm El Sheikh. For those who seek adventure and a connection to the past, the Mount Sinai Adventure is an unmissable journey.
