- St. John’s - Your local guide will meet and greet at your hotel or cruise ship port. From there, we will embark on a panoramic tour through the narrow streets of St. John’s to explore the city’s most iconic spots. During this tour, we’ll discuss current events in Antigua and Barbuda and delve into the city’s architecture. Here are some of the highlights of our panoramic tour: - Heritage Quay duty-free shopping center. - The Fisherman’s market. - V.C. Bird Monument. - Fruit Market. - Craft Market. - St. John’s Cathedral. - Museum of Antigua and Barbuda. Next, we will travel back in time to visit the island as it was a thousand years ago. We’ll stop by the local museum to learn about the island’s history before Christopher Columbus and how the Spaniards influenced the country’s political and cultural landscape.
- Cathedral of St. John the Divine - We will make a brief visit to St. John’s Cathedral and its old cemetery. Two St. John’s Anglican Churches have previously stood on the site of the current cathedral. The first, built of wood in 1681, was described as “totally destitute of beauty or comfort.” The second, constructed with English brick around 1720, replaced the first when it fell into disrepair and became too small. Designed by Mr. Robert Cullen, this church featured a short steeple at its western end. Over a century later, the church was elevated to cathedral status when the Diocese of Antigua was established in August 1842.
- English Harbour - We will leave St. John’s and head to the east side of the island. For approximately 25 minutes, you will enjoy the urban and countryside scenery while your local guide points out places of historical and cultural interest along the way.
- Nelson’s Dockyard - Your expert local guide will introduce the group to the British colonization period of Antigua and Barbuda and the country’s journey to independence. We’ll head to the beach on a panoramic tour through English Harbour and Nelson’s Dockyard, the world’s only remaining Georgian dockyard.
- Shirley Heights - A short drive will take us to Shirley Heights, located at the southernmost point of the island. This site served as a lookout post and stronghold in 1787. Although the officer’s quarters and main buildings now lie in ruins, the area offers a stunning view of the southeast coast, the large gunpowder magazine, and the cistern and catchment area of the Blockhouse. You can also see Eric Clapton’s House from here. The view of English Harbour from this vantage point is spectacular. Historical records indicate that every night a large chain was drawn across the channel from Fort Berkeley to block ships from entering the harbour, helping to prevent sieges.
- Long Bay - Finally, the beach! After a two-hour historical and informative tour of Antigua and Barbuda’s best cultural and touristic sites, we will head to Long Bay Beach, an authentic Caribbean paradise. Long Bay Beach is one of the island’s most beautiful snorkeling spots and arguably one of the best beaches in the Caribbean. Enjoy the calm, turquoise waters under the tropical sun and get a gorgeous Caribbean tan to show off back home. Spend some free time at the beach with various nautical activities available. Your local guide will stay with you to share more about the local cuisine or perhaps teach you some Soca dance moves! The “Antigua: History, Local Food, and Snorkeling Whole Island Tour” is the best way to discover the entire island of Antigua and Barbuda.
