Drawn by the allure of Jersey’s only working vineyard and distillery, I embarked on a journey to Saint Mary to explore the island’s rich winemaking and distilling traditions. The promise of award-winning wines and unique culinary delights was irresistible.
A Journey Through Jersey’s Vineyards
As a seasoned traveler and wine enthusiast, I have had the pleasure of exploring some of the most exquisite vineyards across Europe. Yet, the allure of Jersey’s only working vineyard and distillery, nestled in the heart of Saint Mary, was irresistible. The promise of a unique insight into the winemaking process, coupled with the opportunity to sample award-winning wines, was enough to draw me to this charming island.
Upon arrival, the breathtaking views of the vineyards set the stage for what was to be an unforgettable experience. Our guide, a knowledgeable and passionate connoisseur, began the tour with a sample of the estate’s Branchage cider. The crispness of the cider, paired with the history of the estate, was a delightful introduction to the world of Jersey wines.
The vineyard itself was a sight to behold. Rows upon rows of grapevines stretched as far as the eye could see, each one meticulously cared for. As we wandered through the vineyard, our guide explained the life of a Jersey vine, from grape to glass. The dedication and passion that went into each bottle were palpable, and I couldn’t help but feel a deep appreciation for the craft.
The Art of Winemaking
Inside the winery, the air was filled with the rich aroma of fermenting grapes. Here, we had the opportunity to sample three of the estate’s wines: a crisp white, a summery rosé, and an award-winning red. Each wine was a testament to the skill and artistry of the winemakers, with flavors that danced on the palate.
Our guide took us through the winemaking process, explaining the different grape varieties used and the meticulous care taken at each stage. The passion and expertise of the winemakers were evident in every sip, and I found myself savoring each glass, eager to learn more about the nuances of each wine.
The highlight of the winery tour was undoubtedly the bottling room, where we enjoyed a refreshing taste of the Branchage Prestige Sparkling Dry Méthode Traditionnelle Fine Cider. The effervescence of the cider was a perfect complement to the rich flavors of the wines, and I couldn’t help but marvel at the craftsmanship that went into each bottle.
A Taste of Jersey’s Distillery
The tour concluded with a visit to the estate’s authentic working Cognac-Style Distillery. Here, we discovered the art of distilling the unique Jersey Cream Liqueur. The sight of the Alembic Charentais Cognac still, where all of La Mare’s spirits are crafted, was a testament to the rich heritage and tradition of Jersey’s distillery.
As we sampled the Jersey Cream Liqueur in chocolate toasting cups, the smoothness of the liqueur paired with the richness of the chocolate was a sensory delight. The experience was further enhanced by the opportunity to try the estate’s homemade chocolate, fudge, and the famous Jersey Black Butter. Each treat was a celebration of Jersey’s culinary heritage, and I found myself indulging in the flavors, savoring each bite.
