Constructed in the early 1900s, this castle is relatively young compared to other northern Omani castles. It now serves as a museum with fascinating exhibits.
Adjacent to the castle is the cemetery where Mazoon Al Mashani, the mother of Sultan Qaboos Bin Said, is interred under identical marble gravestones, along with other relatives of the Sultans.
- Sumhuram Old City - Continuing from Taqah to Khor Rori, the town of Sumhuram was established by royal decree and settled by Hadhrami emigrants. The Dhofar region was a primary source of frankincense in ancient times, and the settlement’s foundation by Hadhramaut was likely driven by a desire to control this valuable resource.
Excavations have revealed the settlement’s layout and confirmed maritime connections with the Ḥaḑramite homeland, India, and the Mediterranean. In 2000, it was inscribed as part of the World Heritage site “Land of Frankincense,” along with other sites on the Incense Route in Oman.

Old Giant Baobabs Tree | شجرة التبلدي المعمرة - These magnificent baobab giants, sometimes adorned with snail rings, tower over the typical Dhofari vegetation and are the only such trees on the Arabian Peninsula.

Jabal Samhan - Jebel Samhan is a prominent mountain range in Dhofar, with its highest peak reaching 2,100 meters.
Jebel Samhan features multiple levels traversed by deep and narrow mountain passes, some reaching up to a thousand feet deep.
In the plains of Jebel Samhan, various plant species like acacia and frankincense trees thrive.
Although the narrow mountain passes have limited water, numerous streams provide essential water sources for the local wildlife. The Arabian leopard, classified as endangered, along with other mammals like the Arabian Gazelle, fox, and Nubian goat, inhabit these mountains.
Leopards are considered highly adapted to their environment. The Arabian leopard is typically smaller and lighter than its African counterparts. Historically, the Arabian Leopard inhabited the northern mountain range of the Arabian Peninsula. Oman is abundant in natural beauty.
- Mirbat - Continue the journey to Mirbat, a coastal town in the Dhofar governorate. In ancient times, Mirbat was a hub for exporting frankincense to distant lands like China. It was once the capital of Dhofar, with its economy based on the frankincense trade and Arabian horse breeding. Visit the port of Mirbat and explore the old houses of the town.
