- Taqah Castle - Located 33 KM east of Salalah, Oman, Taqah Castle was once the home of Sheikh Ali bin Taman Al Ma’shani, the grandfather of the former Sultan, Sultan Qaboos Bin Said.
Built in the early 1900s, Taqah Castle is relatively young compared to other castles in northern Oman. It now serves as a museum with fascinating exhibits worth exploring.
Adjacent to the castle is the cemetery where Mazoon Al Mashani, the mother of Sultan Qaboos Bin Said, is buried under identical marble gravestones. Other family members, including uncles and grandfathers of the Sultans, are also interred there.
- Sumhuram Old City - Continuing from Taqah to Khor Rori, you’ll find the ancient town of Sumhuram, established by royal decree and settled by Hadhrami emigrants. The Dhofar region was a major source of frankincense in ancient times, and the settlement’s foundation by Hadhramaut was likely driven by a desire to control this valuable resource.
Excavations have revealed the settlement’s layout and confirmed maritime connections with Hadhramaut, India, and the Mediterranean. In 2000, Sumhuram was inscribed as part of the World Heritage site “Land of Frankincense,” along with other sites along the Incense Route in Oman.

Old Giant Baobabs Tree | شجرة التبلدي المعمرة - These magnificent baobab trees, sometimes encircled by snails, tower over the typical Dhofari vegetation and are the only such trees on the Arabian Peninsula.

Jabal Samhan - Jebel Samhan is a prominent mountain range in Dhofar, with its highest peak reaching 2,100 meters.
The range features multiple levels with deep and narrow mountain passes, some plunging up to a thousand feet. The plains of Jebel Samhan are home to various plant species, including acacia and frankincense trees.
While the narrow passes are water-scarce, numerous streams provide essential water sources for the local wildlife. The area is home to endangered Arabian leopards, as well as other mammals like the Arabian gazelle, fox, and Nubian goat.
Arabian leopards are well-adapted to their environment, typically smaller and lighter than their African counterparts. Historically, they inhabited the northern mountain ranges of the Arabian Peninsula. Oman boasts a rich natural landscape.
- Mirbat - Continue your journey to the coastal town of Mirbat in the Dhofar governorate. Historically, Mirbat was a hub for exporting frankincense to distant lands like China. It was once the capital of Dhofar, thriving on the frankincense trade and Arabian horse breeding. Visit the port of Mirbat and stroll through its old houses.
