Salzburg Marionette Theater - Fans of The Sound of Music will recognize this remarkable puppet theater, in operation since 1913. It’s the oldest continuously running theater of its kind globally. The Lonely Goatherd and the puppet scene in The Sound of Music were inspired by this theater.

This theater inspired one of the most iconic scenes, “The Lonely Goatherd.”
- Stift Nonnberg - The oldest abbey north of the Alps (established in 714 AD) featured several times in The Sound of Music. Only the exterior was used in the film; interior shots were done in a studio.
- Leopoldskroner Weiher - Stop here for a view across the lake to Palace Leopoldskron, a beautiful rococo building used as the back of the family house in The Sound of Music. The boat scene was filmed here, and it was once home to the original Gazebo.
- Schloss Frohnburg - A brief stop and walk to the 17th-century Palace Frohnburg, where Maria arrived, hopping, swinging her guitar, and singing “I Have Confidence” in The Sound of Music.
- Schloss Hellbrunn - Famous for its trick water fountains, Hellbrunn Palace has housed the original Gazebo since 1991. Some of the most memorable and romantic scenes from The Sound of Music, like “16 Going on 17” with Liesl and Rolf and “Something Good,” were performed in this timeless Gazebo.
