- The Palace Complex of Ak-Saray - Head to Shahrisabz to visit the Ak Saray Palace (White Palace), open from 9am to 6pm. Ak Saray translates to “white palace,” but “ak” can also mean “generous,” “aristocratic,” or “majestic.” Chronicler Sherif Eddin Ali Yezdi noted that the world had never seen such a structure before, reaching from the earth to the heavens. Spanish ambassador Clavigo mentioned that decoration work was still ongoing in 1404. The building’s scale is evident from its gate towers, which were 50 meters high with a 22-meter arch span. The palace was destroyed in the 16th century by order of Bukhara’s ruler, Abdullah Khan.
- Kok-Gumbaz Mosque - Built in 1435, the Kok-Gumbaz mosque (“Blue Dome”) stands opposite Kulyal’s mausoleum on the same axis. An inscription on the portal states that Ulugbek constructed it on behalf of his father, Shah Rukh. It served as the Juma Mosque, the Friday Cathedral Mosque of Shahrisabz.
- Dorut Tilovat - The Dorut-Tilavat madrasah architectural ensemble mainly dates back to Ulugbek’s reign. Initially, a domed mausoleum was built over Sheikh Kul’s tomb, incorporating remnants of earlier structures. Stroll around and capture stunning photos of the massive blue dome over the Friday mosque and the elaborate arches.
- Statue of Amir Timur - This spot is popular with locals and wedding parties. Located in the center of a newly built park filled with greenery and flowers, you can enjoy delicious ice cream at one of the “chayhanas” (traditional tea houses) with carved wooden columns.
