Highlights
  • Gur Emir Mausoleum - This is the mausoleum of Amir Temur and his family.
  • Registan - The three madrasahs of the Registan are the Ulugh Beg Madrasah (1417–1420), the Sher-Dor Madrasah (1619–1636), and the Tilya-Kori Madrasah (1646–1660). Madrasah is an Arabic term meaning school. Mirzo Ulugbek, the grandson of Amir Temur, was a king and scholar in the 15th century. His madrassah introduced new subjects such as Math, Medicine, Astronomy, and others.
  • Bibi-Khanym Mausoleum - Built in the 15th century, this is the largest mosque in Samarkand, constructed by Amir Temur in honor of his first wife. It is considered a masterpiece of the Timurid Renaissance. By the mid-20th century, only a grandiose ruin remained, but significant parts were restored during the Soviet period.
  • Siyob Bozor - This bazaar is famous for Samarkand bread, dried fruits, and national sweets. Located next to the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, tourists can take photos with locals, taste national sweets, and buy souvenirs.
  • Shah-i-Zinda - Shah-i-Zinda is a cemetery of princes, meaning “living king” in Persian. In the 7th century, Abu Abbas, the nephew of Muhammad S.A.V., passed away during a war, and his grave is located here. It later became a burial site for princes and princesses.
  • Monument to Mirzo Ulugbek - Mirzo Ulugbek, the grandson of Amir Temur, had a keen interest in observing the stars and focused mainly on science. The Ulugh Beg Observatory, built in the 1420s in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, was constructed under the Timurid Empire and was the last of its kind from the Islamic Medieval period. Notable Islamic astronomers who worked there include Jamshid al-Kashi, Ali Qushji, and Ulugh Beg himself. The observatory was destroyed in 1449 and rediscovered in 1908.
  • Samarkand Textile Workshop - Here, you can discover silk and wool carpets. Visitors can watch how women create these intricate silk carpets, which can take at least three months to complete. The various patterns and pictures on the carpets are like a museum.
