Highlights
  • Panjakent - Meet your driver at the hotel for a transfer to the Uzbek-Tajik border. Upon arrival, you will need to walk across the border. After completing border formalities, you will be greeted by the Tajikistan staff and driven to Penjikent.

  • Seven Lakes - Drive to Marghuzor, the first lake, situated at an elevation of 1,640 meters. Its name translates to ‘eyelashes’ in Tajik and is known for its vibrant colors. Next, visit Soya Lake, which means ‘shadow’ due to its location between high cliffs, keeping it in the shade most of the day. The third lake, Gushor, is just 400 meters from Soya and is connected by a turbulent stream. Gushor translates to ‘watchful’ and is surrounded by steep cliffs. The fourth lake, Nofin, is the central lake and translates to ‘umbilical cord’ due to its 2.5 km length. The fifth lake, Khurdak, is 1.5 km from Nofin and is the smallest of the seven, translating to ‘the baby.’ The sixth lake, Marguzor, is the largest and considered by many to be the most beautiful of the Seven Lakes.

  • Seven Lakes - An optional hike from the sixth lake to Hazorchashma, the seventh and highest of the Seven Lakes, located at around 2,400 meters above sea level. Hazorchashma means ‘a thousand springs,’ as it is fed by two rivers and numerous streams and springs. It is the last lake in the Shing River gorge. The distance is 2.5 km one way with an elevation gain of 340 meters.

Stunning scenery and a great side trip from Samarqand! - This trip is well worth it! The Fan Mountains and Seven Lakes provide unbeatable natural scenery to compliment the historical sites of Samarqand, providing a more comprehensive and varied travel experience to the region. This trip allows ample opportunities to take amazing photographs of the rugged mountains and the brilliant blue waters of the lakes. The tour guide is very friendly and helpful and speaks very good English. The driver picks you up at your hotel in Samarqand, drives you to the border and then you pass through immigration on each side and the tour guide is waiting on the Tajik side. The process is very straightforward although make sure that you don't allow locals to cut the line in immigration :-). Overall, we are truly glad that we decided to supplement our Uzbekistan vacation with this side trip.

Great Day In The Mountains - Very beautiful area. Clean and fresh air. Great guide and great driver to the border. Guide was very interesting and nice. He spoke great English. Driver was very nice. . Road is a little rough, but the trip is worth it They did ask to see my hotel registration at the border. I don’t know if that is common. They did eventually let me cross the border

Smooth day for a small taste of Tajikistan - It's a little pricey but they really make it as easy and smooth as possible. If you want lower cost, then you should arrange your own transport to/from the border, which is actually fairly doable. But this tour really takes out the stress of having to find a ride. Note that you still have to cross the border on foot, and the Tajik guide meets you once you crossed the border. The roads to Seven Lakes was not easy, it took almost 2 hours from the border to the first lake. And half of that is on rocky and dirt road. So if you don't mind sitting in a car on a bumpy road for 3 hours (which I didn't), then you'll have a good time. Each of the lake has its own character, and imo the first lake is the most spectacular with its colors (the cover photo is the 1st lake). Overall, I was able to get a taste of Tajikistan in just a day with minimal planning, so I consider this a win.

Great short tour to see Tajikistan, the seven lakes and Fan Mountains! - Well organised tour from Samarkand, a worthwhile addition if only visiting Uzbekistan. The tour went as planned and the lakes and mountains were truly beautiful. We felt that it was a great insight into Tajikistan even for the short time we had.

Great tour - Me and my wife did the 7 lakes tour from Samarkand. We were picked up from our hotel in Samarkand on time, and dropped off to the border, we we’re then met by our amazing guide Farrukh and a driver and went off on the 7 lake tour, Farrukh is a really great guy and shows passion and care for his country, he really wants to show the best of it and went above and beyond on our tour, we visited the mosque in Panjakent together as well as I had to pray, and anything we asked for he catered for, while giving us detailed information about the country and questions we had. The tour company responds quickly to WhatsApp messages, are very organised, and can even help with visa questions. Would very much recommend, thank you for showing us beautiful Tajikistan. Day trip to Tajik mountains - Well organized private tour into the scenic Tajik mountains with pickup at our hotel in Samarkand. Our guide Afred spoke fluent English, was very knowledgeable and engaging. He was a safe driver—very important as it is a rough, tricky road that a novice should not attempt. The border crossing was easy with cars on either side arranged for us.

Worth it! - This tour was worth it! I traveled solo from Samarkand and I was picked up by a driver from my hotel to the Tajikistan border. It took 15 minutes to undergo passport control at the border. I was met by another driver and tour guide in Tajikistan and they were fantastic! Great driving and very knowledgeable about Tajikistan and the Seven Lakes. It takes about 3 hours to go up to the Sixth Lake with most of this time spent on bumpy gravel road but the scenery was definitely worth the travel! We had a late lunch in Panjakent and we met one more tour guide who toured me through the Sarazm ruins. Overall I would recommend doing this tour for the scenery and kind people!
