The Ancient City, also known as Muang Boran, is an expansive open-air museum designed in the shape of Thailand. Here, visitors can explore numerous significant structures such as temples, palaces, and ancient city ruins, spanning from early Thai history to the present day.
The structures are mostly scaled-down replicas, approximately one-third the size of the originals. However, some buildings are the actual originals that were dismantled and reconstructed in Muang Boran.
Located in a vast park in Samut Prakan, about 30 kilometers from Bangkok, the site allows visitors to journey through Thai history and culture, showcasing different empires and kingdoms like Lanna, Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, and Rattanakosin.
Preserving Thai National Heritage
The Ancient City was the brainchild of Thai millionaire Khun Lek Viriyaphant, who also established the Erawan Museum in Samut Prakan and the Sanctuary of Truth temple in Pattaya. Khun Lek created Muang Boran to safeguard Thailand’s national heritage for future generations. Given the vast number of historic sites scattered across Thailand and the considerable distances between them, Muang Boran offers a comprehensive overview of Thai history, architecture, and culture in just one day.
Don’t forget to bring your camera, as there are countless beautiful photo opportunities. Muang Boran is a serene and tranquil place, reminiscent of a large archaeological site, where you can easily spend an entire day.
