A must see, when visiting Peru, perhaps even more worthwhile than Machu Picchu - Visiting Caral, the oldest civilization in the Americas, 7000 yrs old, older than ancient Egypt, should be on everyone's itinerary when visiting Peru. It is far more significant than Machu Picchu, but less than 100 tourists visit Caral daily. Of course, the remoteness, really bad roads (once you get off the Pan American hwy) and the cost of a day trip (about $150pp) may be a deterrent, but if people are willing to pay up to $300 to visit Machu Picchu, there should be no excuse to miss this extraordinary archeological site. The scenery around the desert is breathtaking, and the required guided tour of the site, which is only 20 sol for a group of 10 (In addition to the site admission charge of 15 sol pp) offers a refreshing perspective for understanding the unique histories of the earliest peoples in the Americas and their great accomplishments. Best way to visit and save money in the process - rent a compact 4 wheel drive (for the bad section of the road, which is the last 15 km around the site) from Lima Airport (with all insurance about $90 and about $40 in gasoline) and this way, you avoid all the horrendous driving and traffic around Lima and easily can access the Pan American highway (tolls about 20 sol each way for a car) to drive up to Caral. The 3 hr drive to Caral passes beautiful landscapes through the deserts, mountainous terrain, along the Pacific coast. For a family of 4, doing the whole day trip cost us less than what tours charge for one person to visit Caral.

A great day trip from Lima with a great tour guide and driver - This is a great tour and a great tour company! We had had a bad experience with one of the bigger tour companies in Lima and I asked the concierge at our hotel for a recommendation for a tour company to use. They suggest KulTour. First off I liked that it was a small personal tour, not a big bus tour. We were picked up on time and on our way. Jordan the guide was very personable and wanted to get to know us. Jorge the driver was great behind the wheel. The ride was long but Jordan told us about himself as well as the history of Peru. The tour at Caral is given by a local as per regulations, but Jordan translated for us (perfectly) and added other facts that he knew as well. The trip included lunch and my family tend to be picky eaters so Jordan made sure that there was something we would eat at the restaurant. He even offered to share his so we could get a taste of an authentic Peruvian dish. One last thing. I had said that we had a bad experience on a big bus tour (see my other review) and he actually took the time to fill us in on the things that we missed hearing about. He was so good I booked a tour of some of the same sights with KulTour the next day (and we were happy to have Jordan and Jorge again!). I am supposed to come back to Peru and will definately be using KulTour again.

First, kudos to my terrific and very... -
First, kudos to my terrific and very knowledgeable guide Maria and exceptionally patient driver Julio. Most of the travel is on the Pan American highway which is in very good shape as it travels through many communities and hugs the coastline heading north. Somewhat strange was seeing mostly luxury sleeper travel buses and trucks with very few cars. The last 5 Kilometers are very difficult as the road when paved is terribly rutted for almost the entire distance. The tour involves lots of walking and is very limited for physically challenged assistance. I strongly recommend long pants and long sleeve shirt as the area is hot, dry desert environment sitting above a lush green valley. Be prepared for a very long day and an amazing experience. By the way, the photo used for the tour listing was either taken by a helicopter or a drone.
