The Arenal 1968 Trail’s main attraction is its proximity to the stunning views of Arenal Volcano. You get to see the once molten lava flows, which have now solidified into rock, descending the volcano and reaching the valley. The border of the lava field is dotted with volcanic boulders of varying sizes. It’s fascinating to realize that during eruptions, these rocks were ejected into the atmosphere at speeds reaching up to 2,000 km (1,200 miles) per hour. One particularly large rock left an impressive crater visible from the trail. There are a few different paths to reach these sights.
Note: For safety reasons, hiking trails around Arenal Volcano are confined to areas around the base. Despite no significant activity since 2010, the volcano remains active, known to emit toxic gases and hot steam near its peak.
