As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves and exploring the coastal wonders of Central America. But every now and then, I crave a different kind of adventure, one that takes me away from the ocean’s embrace and into the heart of nature’s untouched beauty. That’s how I found myself in San Cristobal de las Casas, ready to embark on the Sumidero Canyon Tour and discover the natural wonders of Chiapa de Corzo.

The day began with a sense of anticipation as we set off to explore the majestic Sumidero Canyon. Our journey started with a visit to the miradores, the viewpoints that offer breathtaking vistas of the canyon’s grandeur. While I initially hoped to see these views bathed in the afternoon light, the morning sun cast a different kind of magic over the landscape. The towering cliffs and lush greenery seemed to stretch endlessly, a reminder of nature’s awe-inspiring power.

A Thrilling Ride Through Nature’s Masterpiece

With the miradores behind us, it was time to experience the canyon from a different perspective. We boarded a speedboat at the Cahuaré jetty, ready to navigate the winding waters of the Sumidero Canyon. As the boat picked up speed, the wind whipped through my hair, a familiar sensation that reminded me of the ocean’s embrace.

Our guide was a true expert, pointing out the canyon’s geological formations and the diverse wildlife that call this place home. We were lucky enough to spot crocodiles basking in the sun, iguanas lounging on the rocks, and monkeys swinging through the trees. The highlight, however, was the Christmas tree-shaped waterfall, a natural wonder that left me in awe of the earth’s artistry.

A Taste of Chiapa de Corzo

After our exhilarating boat ride, we made our way to the charming town of Chiapa de Corzo. With just an hour to spare, I knew I had to make the most of my time. I wandered through the town’s vibrant streets, soaking in the rich culture and history that permeates every corner.

I managed to grab a quick lunch at a local eatery, savoring the flavors of Chiapas before it was time to head back. While I wished for more time to explore, the brief visit was a perfect taste of the town’s unique charm.

Reflecting on the day’s adventure, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the Sumidero Canyon’s natural wonders. It was a reminder that while the ocean will always be my first love, there’s a whole world of beauty waiting to be discovered beyond the waves.
