• La Jolla Tide Pools - Ahead, keep right and slow down as you drive. Of course, La Jolla’s history didn’t begin when humans arrived here. Life on the Pacific coast has been thriving for millions of years.
• La Jolla Woman’s Club - In a few blocks, we’re going to see a small building with a long history. It’s the La Jolla Woman’s Club, founded by - who else? - Ellen Scripps. When the club began in 1901, American women lacked any sort of equality, with no right to vote, and no right to custody of their children.
• St James by-The-Sea Episcopal Church - Do you see a peach-colored belltower ahead? That’s St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church. It dates to 1908 and, like much of La Jolla, owes its existence to Ellen Scripps.
• Athenaeum Music and Arts Library - The white Spanish-revival building with terracotta shingles and arched windows is a must for lovers of the arts. It’s the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library.
• Jose’s CourtRoom - The white cross on that hill marks a solemn and at times controversial location: the Mt. Soledad National Veteran’s Memorial.
• Windansea Beach - Windansea is what’s known as a surf break. Rocky obstructions under the water here cause waves to break and also form those classic barrel-shaped curls that make for radical surfing.
