Muir Woods National Monument - Delight in the natural beauty of Coastal Sequoias! Muir Woods National Monument, named after naturalist John Muir, is located on Mount Tamalpais near the Pacific coast in southwest Marin County. It is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, just 12 miles (19 km) north of San Francisco. The monument protects 554 acres (224 ha), including 240 acres (97 ha) of old-growth coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) forests, the tallest living trees on Earth. The forest is often enveloped in a coastal marine layer fog due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, maintaining cool and moist conditions year-round with daytime temperatures ranging from 40 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit (4 to 21 °C). Millions of years ago, ancestors of redwood and sequoia trees thrived across North America. Today, Sequoia sempervirens are found only in a narrow, cool coastal belt from Monterey County, California, to Oregon.
