San Giovanni Rotondo is renowned globally as the birthplace of St. Pio (commonly known as Padre Pio) of Pietrelcina and as the city where the revered monk performed his miracles. Pio was beatified in 2002. At the Capuchin Monastery, Padre Pio received the stigmata in 1918, and numerous supernatural events occurred that contributed to his sainthood and canonization. It is a must-visit destination for both the devout and tourists. The Church’s crypt housed the tomb of St. Pio until a few years ago. The Sanctuary of the Archangel Michael, or San Michele, located in the grotto, dates back to the 5th-6th centuries and marks the beginning of devotion to the Archangel Michael. The original grotto of San Michele is believed to have been consecrated by the archangel himself and is the only church not consecrated by human hands.
