San Giovanni Rotondo is globally renowned as the birthplace of the esteemed St. Pio (or Padre Pio) of Pietrelcina, attributed with performing miracles. Padre Pio was beatified in 2002. The Capuchin Monastery is the place where the highly regarded monk received his stigmata in 1918; this is where his sanctification and canonization took root. It is a place that travelers and faithful followers alike should aim to visit. For some time, the Church’s crypt housed the grave of St. Pio. The Sanctuary of the Archangel Michael, or San Michele, situated in the cave and dating back to the centuries 5th - 6th, is a place of early devotion to the Archangel Michael. The original grotto of San Michele was allegedly sanctified by the archangel himself, making it unique as the only church not dedicated by human hands.
