Highlights
  • Chiesa di San Pio - Following Padre Pio’s passing, his fellow friars, deeply attuned to the physical and spiritual requisites of the faithful, realized the need for a larger sanctuary as the existing one was insufficient. Subsequently, after reviewing numerous proposals, the friars commissioned architect Renzo Piano to design a new church with a capacity for 6,500 attendees. In terms of size, it is second only to St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Originally dedicated to Santa Maria delle Grazie, the newly envisioned sanctuary by Renzo Piano, with its vast conch-like structure, stands as Italy’s second-largest church, surpassed only by the Duomo in Milan. The construction, which spanned a decade, resulted in the Church of St. Pio, also known as the new Sanctuary, predominantly funded by donations from pilgrims. It is now capable of accommodating 6,500 individuals simultaneously.

Additional Information

Globally renowned as the birthplace of St. Pio (Padre Pio) of Pietrelcina, San Giovanni Rotondo is celebrated for being the site where this revered monk performed his miracles. Padre Pio was beatified in 2002. The Capuchin Monastery is where he received the stigmata in 1918 and where the supernormal occurrences leading to his sainthood and canonization happened. A visit to this Monastery and a look into the rooms where St. Pio lived means immersing oneself in a spiritual and mystical setting; it’s a place all devotees and tourists should strive to see. Until a few years ago, the Church’s crypt was the resting place for St. Pio’s tomb. The Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie is situated next to the Monastery. This deep fusion of historical, religious and architectural facets make the Sanctuaries of Padre Pio a must-visit for everyone, including those of different faiths or those with no religious beliefs.
