Excellent Adventure! - Swimming, climbing and spelunking through the cave, this was an awesome experience. The crew who picked us up and fed us were super friendly. Hector was a great guide through the cave too. He was very knowledgeable and took care of everyone in the group. Making sure everyone was comfortable and safe. Thanks for the great day!

Once in a lifetime experience of the Mayan way of life and rituals- AMAZING - This is a must-do Mayan can experience in Belize and I'd recommend it highly. Our guide Orlando did an amazing job through the tour and gave us a never to forget, once in a lifetime experience. The experience is very physical that starts with a 2 mile moderate hike where we crossed the Roaring river 3 times, maximum was chest height water but we had life jackets. The cave also has water almost through the half a mile trek inside the cave, there's a lot of boulder climbing and navigating tight spaces but all worth it if one can manage. The cave is beautiful full of amazing stalactites and stalagmites formed over thousands of years. The most amazing part is the Mayan temple in the dry chamber. It's a really sobering experience to set foot in a cave that was used by Mayans for sacrifices 1000+ years back with a lot of artifacts including human remains still intact. Orlando explained the rituals and showed us the key sites in a lot of detail. Phones and Cameras are not allowed for a very good reason but the memories of this tour and the experience is stamped in our brains forever, no pics needed.

DO THIS - Start to finish, this was one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had. It’s a swim/hike in a cave, so be prepared to squeeze through some spaces, do a bit of scrambling up/down rock, and getting wet up to your shoulders. There are only 31 certified guides in the world who can take you here and no matter who you get, they will have more than 20 years of experience because they stopped certifying new guides in 2004. Our guide— Hector— was FANTASTIC. You will be safe in his hands. You will laugh. You will learn. You will have an amazing time. Thank you Cayo Inland Expeditions!

Highlight of our trip to San Ignacio- cannot be beat! - Our tour guide, Hector, was amazing! He spent a lot of time talking about the geology of the cave, the rituals that were performed in the cave, the main people in the area and the archaeologists discoveries. We read a lot of reviews before we signed up for this tour, and the tour exceeded our expectations which were high to begin with!! Our driver was also great, and provided a lot of colorful history as we were driving to pick up Hector. The two of them were a great team! All of the river crossings and the exploration of the cave, climbing up and over rocks, and waiting through water and swimming in the cave were all spectacular!!

Amazing trip - but we were a little rushed - I want to start by saying that if you are in San Ignacio region, this is a trip you simply can't miss. IF you are in reasonably good shape and up for a day of climbing up and down slippery rocks and walking through chest deep rivers then this is the adventure for you! You will be wet for several hours. Having said that, it is an extraordinary experience to visit what feels like an open archeological site and seeing pottery remains and human remains of Mayan sacrifices. Not to mention the Stalactites and stalagmites and other formations in the cave itself that are exquisite. We loved it!! It is truly the most amazing cave I have seen, and when you add in the cultural and historical elements - I don't think there is any other place like it. OK, now here is the part that I think Cayo Expeditions and Hector (our guide) can work on. If you want to be the first ones in the cave, then leave earlier. The cave officially opens at 6am - yet most companies get there after 8am, and then there is this competition between guides (as our driver stated) to see who can get in the cave the fastest. We were literally moving as fast as we could, slipping and sliding through mud on the trail, and then trying to move quickly through rivers and even in the cave itself. Not only could we not stop and enjoy, but this did not feel entirely safe, considering that the rocks are slippery, you are in water, at some points rock climbing in wet shoes, and trying to do this all of this as quickly as possible. There were 4 out of the 6 of us over 50 in our group, so this didn't feel that safe. I do get the fun of being first (we ended up being second) as on the way out there were a LOT of groups behind us. Just having a few people in the caves is much more of a special feeling than 200 people. However, we also didn't need to rush on the way back. Hector said - we need to eat so that others can have the table - so he was encouraging us to rush back for lunch. There were only 2 other groups and many, many tables available when we left the site just after 1pm. It seemed like he maybe just wanted to be done with the tour. Indeed, we were supposed to be dropped off at our hotels between 3-3:30pm and we were dropped off at 2:15pm - a full hour early!! Why the rush?? If you want to be the first in - pick people up at 6:30am. Then don't rush us please! It is a magical experience that should be enjoyed, not rushed through. We wished we had had the full time advertised in the cave, as it is a once in a lifetime experience.

Rare experience, but not for everyone. Hector was great! - Despite reading and researching how to prepare for this tour, I was not prepared for some of the challenges. I had packed a few things I "thought" I could bring along in a small pack, but most were not needed. Water shoes with closed toes & socks were the ticket for footwear, plus quick dry clothes. I chose a tank top with a Smartwool long sleeve to stay warm when wet. A waist pack or sling to hold my water bottle would have been helpful as I needed both hands to climb and navigate narrow passages. Our guide, Hector, was super smart in getting us hiking quickly to the cave to avoid the crowds later. We were fascinated with all the chambers and the history of this unique place. Hector shared a depth of knowledge & history that we never could have grasped otherwise. Being 5'1", there were some unexpected dunkings where the water was over my head. The rest of our crew helped give "short girl warnings" if they encountered deep water so I could at least be prepared. Some of the displays of bones, skulls, etc. were a bit grim, but an accurate depiction of what the Mayans believed would please the gods, bring rain, etc. On the return trip out of the cave, we encountered a virtual New York subway of people in helmets & head lamps and passing them was not always easy. Our reward was a nice lunch, a chance to get into dry clothes and share our thoughts with the rest of the group. The bathrooms at the trailhead did not have toilet paper, so pack some just in case. We were a little shocked that we didn't have to sign some type of waiver or disclaimer as the risks involved were 10x greater than running a marathon or snorkeling. It was like going through a slot canyon underground, up a river with rock scrambling & small passages with water up to your chest or neck. No belly scrambling, so it wasn't terribly claustrophobic, but our core muscles were sore from all the balancing, crossing streams on slippery rocks, etc. Only 1 person on our tour opted to wear a life jacket & other tours were mandatorily equipped for safety. Hope this helps future adventurers have a good experience.

Awesome cave, terrible tour guide - My partner and I went on the ATM tour a few weeks ago and did not have the best experience. The day before the tour, no one from the company reached out to confirm pickup time or location. No one responded to my messages on viator so I had to call to confirm myself. The day of the tour did not get off to a great start as our tour guide, Ian, did not seem engaged from the start. He didn't introduce himself or the group, we all just got in the van and he said it was going to be an hour until we got there. From the beginning he had very curt or sarcastic responses to questions or comments the group made. He walked very far ahead of the group during the hike to the cave and didn't point out anything interesting or notable along the way. Once we were in the cave, he berated the older couple at the end of the pack for not moving as fast as he wanted them to but they were just being appropriately careful. He again would walk away from the group or start talking about a topic before everyone was caught up. In general he also didn't seem to be particularly knowledgeable about the cave or the Mayans. We could hear other tour guides that were more enthusiastic and giving more information to their groups than what we were getting. We didn't feel comfortable asking questions because we would get a very sarcastic or rude answer anytime we said anything so we stopped trying. On the way back he intentionally trailed behind the whole group and again was not engaging with us at all. The booking also said that towels were available but we had to ask for them from another group and again, got a lot of sass in return. We were very excited about this tour and our experience was definitely hampered because of our tour guide. The cave is amazing, I would love to do it over again with a tour guide who actually wants to be there.
