National Geographic has named Actun Tunichil Muknal (also known as the Cave of the Stone Sepulchre) as the world’s most sacred cave to visit and it is a must-have on your wish list! The trip begins in San Ignacio with a comfortable 45-minute air-conditioned drive, leading you to a ranger station. At this point, our guides will equip you with a helmet, headlamp, and life jacket if required. Once you are kitted out, it’s time to trek, wade, and swim within the sacrificial Mayan underworld of the ATM. The journey involves crossing 3 rivers and a 30-minute hike that will take you to an entrance resembling an hourglass. Beyond this point, the cave system extends nearly 3 miles featuring stalactites, stalagmites, large boulders and streams of fresh water ranging from ankle to waist deep. The cave concludes with the principal chamber where you’ll find the “Crystal Maiden” - believed to be the crystallized remains of a young female sacrifice from a ritualistic bloodletting ceremony.
