Your journey begins at 7:00 a.m. with a scenic 2-hour drive through the wildlife-abundant Mountain Pine Ridge. Many travelers have reported sightings of jaguars and tapirs along the way. The road to Caracol is an adventure in itself!

Upon reaching the site, your guide will share its history, guiding you through historical images and discoveries at the on-site museum. Caracol, meaning “snail” in Spanish, is the largest Maya site in Belize, spanning approximately 75 square miles. It was occupied around 1200 BC, with its epicenter populated by 650 BC, and was abandoned around 950 AD, with the entire site deserted by 1050 AD.

Next, you’ll explore the ancient temples. Try to contain your excitement and listen to your guide as they explain the purposes of various structures and the stories depicted in the stelae. Feel free to climb to the top of Caana, the tallest temple, where you will be truly amazed!

After the exploration, you will head to the park for lunch. Then, return to the Mountain Pine Ridge with the option to stop for a refreshing swim at the stunning Big Rock Falls.

On the return journey from Caracol, there will be a stop at Rio Frio Cave & Big Rock Falls in the Mountain Pine Ridge.

RIO FRIO CAVE: Two enormous 65-foot entryways make it easily accessible and provide natural lighting inside. Huge stalactites hang from its vast cathedral-like vault, with room-sized boulders on the ground where a stream flows through, forming pools with cascading falls.

BIG ROCK FALLS: Nestled deep in the escarpment of the Mountain Pine Ridge, Big Rock Falls is another of the area’s waterfall treasures. The breathtaking view of water rushing over the massive 150-foot rock formations and plunging into the deep, perfectly round pool at its base offers a thrilling experience. A refreshing swim here is a must, whether you’re alone, with a companion, or with family.

Departure: After visiting each site, the journey continues out of the Mountain Pine Ridge and back to San Ignacio, arriving around 4:00 PM (depending on your pace).

After an adventurous ride and a short hike down a steep path, you will arrive at one of the most secluded and relaxing destinations, featuring an incredible waterfall and natural pool for a refreshing dip.

building in modern Belize, with a height of approximately 141 feet.  

After your tour of Caracol Temples, you will visit the Rio Frio Cave & Big Rock Falls on your way back through the Mountain Pine Ridge National Reserve.
