The Mountain Pine Ridge reserve spans over 100,000 acres of protected forest. It primarily features Honduras pine, wetlands, the Macal River valley, and some subtropical forest. The terrain is mostly granite and limestone, with numerous rivers, springs, waterfalls, and caves. This area is a paradise for nature enthusiasts! There is a small forest ranger post and minimal habitation, except for a few isolated Maya communities and a small Mennonite settlement. A former logging settlement at San Luis is now abandoned, as the area has been protected since the 1940s.
This breathtaking and unique natural habitat is home to a variety of bird and mammal species, making it an excellent spot for birdwatching and enjoying the tranquility of nature. Our first stop in the reserve is the Rio Frio Cave, the source of the Rio Frio river and the largest cave entrance in Belize. Next, we visit the Rio On Pools, a series of sparkling natural swimming holes and rock water slides perfect for relaxation and meditation. Experience a water massage from cascading waterfalls that flow over a wide riverbed and smooth granite rocks.
Enjoy a homemade picnic lunch at the pools, followed by a short drive to our next destination, the magnificent Big Rock Falls, a 150-foot waterfall on Privassion Creek. Here, the cool mist from the waterfall refreshes swimmers in the clear, deep pool below. This day of hiking, spelunking, swimming, and potential wildlife watching is not to be missed!
