Additional Information

Encompassing 575 square kilometers of jungle and countless deteriorating structures, Tikal National Park is a vast expanse of ancient landscape. At the heart of the former city, one can find around 3,000 buildings spread across 16 square kilometers. In addition, Tikal plays a significant role in the Mayan Biosphere Reserve - a one million hectare sanctuary established in 1990 that’s fighting to preserve the rapidly disappearing dense forests of Petén from population expansion, unlawful logging, and destructive farming practices of cutting and torching. Based on archaeological studies, it is postulated that the Maya people began habitation in the region presently known as Tikal around the year 900 BC.
