Pedals and Empanadas: A Surfer’s Journey Through San José’s Streets
Trading my surfboard for a bicycle, I embarked on a cultural and culinary journey through San José. With expert guides and delicious stops, it was a refreshing adventure beyond the waves.
Pedaling Through San José’s Heart
As a surfer, I’m used to chasing waves and feeling the ocean breeze on my face. But this time, I traded my surfboard for a bicycle and embarked on a different kind of adventure in the heart of Costa Rica. The San Jose Bike & Bites tour promised a unique cultural and culinary exploration, and it delivered in spades.
Our guides, Laura and Alex, were the perfect companions for this journey. Their passion for San José’s history and culture was infectious, and they had us hanging on their every word. We cycled through vibrant neighborhoods, each with its own story to tell, and past iconic landmarks like the Teatro Nacional Costa Rica. The architecture was stunning, a testament to the city’s rich history.
The ride was smooth, the weather perfect, and the company even better. Laura and Alex’s friendly banter and deep knowledge made the experience feel like a leisurely ride with old friends. It was a refreshing change from the usual surf spots, and I found myself appreciating the city in a whole new light.
A Taste of San José
The tour wasn’t just about cycling; it was a culinary journey as well. Our first stop was Modo Cafe, a contemporary gem nestled inside a charming gift shop. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, a perfect spot to unwind after a morning of cycling.
Daniella and Felipe, the cafe’s owners, treated us to a private coffee tasting session. As someone who usually starts the day with a quick cup of coffee before hitting the waves, this was a revelation. They guided us through the different processes of coffee beans, and we sampled three exquisite varieties. Each sip was a delight, and I was amazed by the depth of flavors.
The cafe also offered a selection of beautiful housewares and gifts, making it a great place to pick up a souvenir or two. It was a delightful stop that added a touch of elegance to our adventure.
Empanadas and Memories
Our next stop was El Fronton, a local institution known for its empanadas. Having traveled extensively through Central America, I’ve had my fair share of empanadas, but these were something special. Made from masa or corn, they were fresh, hot, and incredibly crunchy.
The flavors were a perfect blend of tradition and innovation, and each bite was a reminder of why I love exploring new places. The empanadas were a highlight of the tour, and I couldn’t help but indulge in a few more than I probably should have.
As we wrapped up the tour, I felt a sense of gratitude for the experience. It was a perfect blend of culture, history, and culinary delights, all wrapped up in a leisurely bike ride. For a surfer like me, it was a refreshing change of pace and a reminder that there’s always more to explore beyond the waves.
