From Waves to Highlands: A Surfer’s Journey to Lake Atitlan
Trading the surfboard for a boat, I embarked on a journey to the highlands of Guatemala, exploring the rich culture and breathtaking landscapes of Lake Atitlan and San Juan La Laguna. Join me as I recount this unforgettable adventure.
Journey to the Highlands
The sun was just beginning to rise as we set off from the bustling port of Puerto Quetzal, leaving behind the lowlands and sugar cane fields for a two-and-a-half-hour journey to the highlands of Guatemala. The drive was a visual feast, with lush plantations of sugar cane, coffee, and rubber trees lining the road. Our guide, Armando, shared fascinating insights into the local agriculture, explaining how the indigenous Mayan communities have formed cooperatives to focus on high-quality production. The hand-harvested sugar cane and award-winning coffee are testaments to their dedication and skill.
As we climbed higher, the air grew cooler and the landscape more dramatic. The towering volcanoes surrounding Lake Atitlan came into view, their peaks shrouded in mist. It was a stark contrast to the sun-soaked beaches and surf spots I’m used to exploring, but the beauty of the highlands was undeniable. The journey was long, but the anticipation of what lay ahead kept our spirits high.
A Cultural Immersion in San Juan La Laguna
Upon reaching the small town of Timolan, we navigated through narrow streets bustling with activity due to a local celebration. A town policeman guided our mini-bus to the marina, where we boarded a vibrantly painted boat to cross Lake Atitlan. The lake, formed by a volcanic eruption 85,000 years ago, was a serene expanse of blue, surrounded by the majestic volcanoes.
Our destination was San Juan La Laguna, a village renowned for its indigenous culture and artisanal crafts. As we disembarked, we were greeted by local vendors in traditional attire, eager to share their handmade textiles and crafts. The vibrant colors and intricate designs were captivating, and I couldn’t resist picking up a few souvenirs, woven with care by a local artisan named Lucy.
Lunch was a delightful affair at a nearby resort, where we enjoyed a buffet of Guatemalan dishes amidst marble floors and elegant settings. Our guides joined us, sharing stories of local customs and politics, and we found common ground in our shared frustrations with global politics. It was a moment of connection, a reminder of the universal nature of human experiences.
Reflections on the Return Journey
As we made our way back across the lake, the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the water. The return journey to the port was a chance to reflect on the day’s experiences. The warmth and hospitality of the people we met, the rich cultural heritage of the Mayan communities, and the breathtaking natural beauty of Lake Atitlan left a lasting impression.
The bus ride back was a bit of an adventure, with our driver Eduardo skillfully navigating the bumpy roads to ensure we made it back to the port in time. It was a fitting end to a day filled with discovery and camaraderie.
This journey to the highlands of Guatemala was a departure from my usual surf-centric adventures, but it was a reminder of the diverse beauty and culture that Central America has to offer. Whether riding the waves or exploring the highlands, there’s always something new to discover.
