The Call of the Volcano

As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves of Central America, but the call of the land sometimes beckons just as strongly as the ocean. When I heard about the San Miguel Volcano hike, I knew it was time to trade my surfboard for hiking boots and explore the rugged beauty of El Salvador from a different perspective. My wife and I, always eager for a new adventure, set our sights on the towering Chaparrastique, a majestic stratovolcano that promised an epic journey.

We started our adventure in the early hours, leaving the familiar coastal breezes of El Tunco behind as we made our way to the small town of Chinameca. The drive was long, about three hours each way, but the anticipation of what lay ahead kept our spirits high. As the sun began to rise, casting a golden hue over the landscape, we arrived at the base of the volcano, ready to embark on what would be one of the most challenging hikes of our lives.

The Ascent

Our guide, Josue, was a beacon of knowledge and enthusiasm. The hike was approximately 15 kilometers round trip, and while the path was sketchy at times, Josue’s guidance made the journey feel seamless.

The Summit

Reaching the summit of Chaparrastique was a moment of pure exhilaration. Standing at 6990 feet, we were greeted by a sweeping view of the surrounding landscape, a patchwork of greens and browns stretching as far as the eye could see. The crater itself was a sight to behold, a reminder of the raw power of nature and the ever-present possibility of eruption.

As we took in the view, I couldn’t help but reflect on the parallels between surfing and hiking. Both require a deep respect for nature, an understanding of its rhythms and moods, and a willingness to embrace the unknown. The descent was just as thrilling as the climb, and as we made our way back to Chinameca, I felt a profound sense of gratitude for the experience.
